'Labour's lost it,' says the Sun 06:52am on 30 Sep 2009 Before you read too much into this, just consider another possible motivation behind Murdoch's switch. If they win the next election, the Conservatives are planning to weaken the BBC which would leave more media space up for grabs by, say, News International. Any comment on that, Nick?

But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater as protectionism will do precious little protecting. I am a UK citizen working abroad and like to think I am employed on my merits. If you can't compete on price then you have to compete on skills and quality. UK relies on many 'foreign' companies to employ UK citizens so don't make the country unattractive to them!

As a Brit living in the Netherlands, I enjoy your postings and think your reporting is pretty straightforward. To anyone who thinks the BBC is biased towards the EU or anyone else, I'd advise them to get their news from a variety of sources and make up their own minds. With a few mouse clicks you can read all of the day's newspapers from all around the world, news channels, as well as countless message boards. After all, we all have our biases and preferences, so why not try to broaden your mind a little.
Green's arrest draws parallels 4:07pm on 28 Nov 2008 I have sufficient faith in our police that they will have done what they think is right according to the law. I am surprised that the Conservative leadership thinks it is ok to knock them in the way drunk or speeding drivers complain that 'they should be out catching criminals instead'. I also have no problem with MPs being treated in the same way as the rest of us. And let us not forget that official secrets regulations, while they can be misused, also allow government to do their job. Today it's embarrassing, tomorrow it could be leaking dangerous stuff. As always, if he did nothing wrong, he has nothing to worry about.
Extraordinary 8:29pm on 07 Nov 2008 I do not think we should knock the voters of Glenrothes who turned out in pretty reasonable numbers to exercise their democratic right, benefit-dependent or not! When the rest of us get our chance, as we surely will, we should vote according to our own views and values and leave others to theirs. By the way, although they're trying hard, Cameron and Osborne are no Barack Obama, being far more establishment than anyone and far closer to the 'bankers' who got us in to the current mess.

How come public opinion can contradict to economic indicators so much?"

It's true that many complained but I think people complained as it took a long time to get used to having fewer units of currency. Supermarkets in the Netherlands showed dual pricing long before and long after the euro was introduced as an actual currency and in reality nothing changed. What people do forget is that we are now several years further so conversting back to the old currency is unrealistic. Of course prices have gone up but if I also convert my salary it sounds high as well!
Humiliation for the PM 4:51pm on 23 Apr 2008 Politically, the abolition of the 10p rate has been incredibly unpopular as it's easy to point out plus it suggests incorrectly that lower paid people will now be paying double the amount of tax. But people forget very quickly the other side of the equation e.g. minimum wage, winter fuel payments which the Conservatives never would have introduced. After all, they are the party who brought us the poll tax! Interesting also to see that Cameron uses the word 'dither' every second sentence to describe GB - could be he's more worried than he makes out that Gordon is much more substantial than he is: take away the many and obvious soundbites and what does Cameron stand for? Answers on a very small postcard...
