Bitter recriminations at the Bridge 09:38am on 07 May 2009 Chelsea may feel robbed and they had a good shout at several penalties but let's be honest: Barca-Man U is the dream final and the neutral should be pleased about that. And Chelsea squandered several chances to finish the game. If you miss chances you risk getting hit with a sucker punch. And all those penalty appeals were deniable. The handballs were accidental, the Alves foul started outside and it was more obstruction than foul. And Drogba dived twice in the area while Anelka did not need to go down under Abidal's challenge for the red card, he could have run on and tried to score. And Drogba missed two one on ones with Valdes. I personally don't feel sorry for Chelsea, they were the greater architecht's of their own downfall.
Batting for Afghanistan 4:50pm on 21 Apr 2009 An interesting piece Matthew and I hope the Afghan team continues its progress and who knows, maybe cricket can become a unifying element in the country. On another note, regarding the comment from Shams35, it is interesting how the most innocuous looking feel-good human interest story can fire people's prejudices and bigotry.
The Beckham of boxing? 3:28pm on 15 Apr 2009 I don't think DLH had to be the greatest to have been a great fighter. I don't think criticism of him because his fans thought he was the greatest is fair either. He was a great boxer, did great things in the sport, was a huge draw, made shed loads of money and ultimately wasn't quite as good as a few others. He did lose the majority of his career-defining fights but had decisions gone for him rather than against him against Mosely (2), Mayweather and even Trinidad, no-one would have been screaming blue murder and that would have put a very different slant on his career. He won his first title at super-featherweight so it's no great shame to have found that a middleweight battle against Hopkins (now fighting at light-heavy) was a step too far. And the Pacquiao fight shouldn't be held against him too much either as quite frankly it was just the confirmation that his time was up. Don't forget Erik Morales got blasted out by Pacquiao in 3 rounds in his penultimate fight but that doesn't stop El Terribile being a lightweight great.
Scolari fails to step out of Jose's shadow 09:50am on 10 Feb 2009 This is yet another example of hapless mismanagement. Chelsea are now in decline and probably will no longer be able to challenge for the title. And where is the fault? Chelsea's hierarchy. How can you expect to challenge without continuity? United didn't win the title from 2004-06, in fact they didn't even come close. But the United board has faith in Fergie and gave him the time to rebuild and remount a challenge - now they'll win a hat-trick of PL titles for the second time. Chelsea will pay for their impatience, their top foreign stars will want to leave (except the aging ones that play for money) and they won't be able to attract the best younger players like they did before. What did Grant do wrong? He was a Terry slip away from winning the Champions League and at the beginning of this season Scolari's team were by far the best in the league. Not to mention how could you sack Mourinho in the first place??? Chelsea are going down and tey deserve it because their decision-makers are clowns.
