Farewell Edward Woodward 00:04am on 01 Dec 2009 Americans think Paranormal Activity is scary. Err, no. What's scary is Christopher Lee in a wig, prancing around a fire. THAT is scary.

RIP Edward Woodward, and curse Nicholas "Horse face" Cage for his idiotic, buttock-clenchingly lame, demented, and nonsensical remake that only proved Americans just do not get cinema.
The Best Christmas Movie Ever 9:25pm on 19 Nov 2009 For me, the best contemporary Christmas film is 'Groundhog Day'. Sure, it's not set at Christmas, but it has all the right ingredients: love, comedy, and lots of snow! It just has a very Christmas'y feel, I think. Just watch it on Christmas Day, you'll see. :D
The second second time around 3:14pm on 30 Oct 2009 To be honest, I think some of Mark's favourites like 'Pan's Labyrinth' need more than one viewing. I've only watched it once since I bought it; I'm trying to find the energy to watch it again. In fact apart from Hellboy, its sequel, and Blade 2, I don't really have much time for Guillermo del Torro - sometimes he seems to be a bit too self-indulgent in his films, just like Spielberg. (Why are so many Spielberg films indirectly about him and his childhood; and why are so many Guillermo del Torro films indirectly about the Spanish civil war?).

You hum it and I'll play it 01:31am on 17 Oct 2009 Actors 'playing' musical instruments badly in their roles is as bad as watching John Redwood MP pretending to sing the Welsh national anthem while not knowing the words and hoping no-one would notice. (I know that won't mean much to you Mark, being "out of the loop" when it comes to politics, but you get my point).

Bernard_the_King - which was your favourite LOTR film? Mine's Return of the King. The final charge into battle on the fields of Palinnor are just cinematic magic. I wish I'd seen all 3 at the cinema; they must have been breath-taking.

My favourite big budget film is probably Independence Day: it does exactly what it says on the tin. Though I have to admit the entire LOTR trilogy share first place, too. Oh to hell with that, I can't decide!
We're closing the 5 live messageboards 9:17pm on 05 Oct 2009 Here's an idea: why not have a messageboard as normal, with a disclaimer before posting, saying "Views and opinions expressed here in no way reflect the views and opinions of the BBC, its employees or its affiliates". Why does it have to be moderated? Aren't we adult enough? Clearly not.

If BBC employees can't even be bothered to moderate these boards and that's why they're closing, then why the hell were they opened in the first place?! One thing's for sure - this is the end of freedom of speech, such as it was, on the BBC. Make no mistake.
No ordinary week for the PM 9:10pm on 26 Sep 2009 Gordon Brown reminds me of that character in Monty Python's 'Holy Grail' (I think) who, despite having his limbs sliced off, insists "it's just a flesh wound". I cannot for the life of me understand how a man who is so uncomfortable in public, so socially inept, so awkward wanted to be PM. He clearly thought he could do the job hiding behind a desk away from the cameras and the voters. He's a monumental idiot.

Words just cannot convey fully how much I want Gordon Brown, and Labour, cast into political oblivion.
Screening Process 7:15pm on 18 Sep 2009 Even though I haven't seen 'Bride Wars' I know it's monumentally crap just by the trailer, poster, themes, plot, and cast list. And while I can't really think of any film that could be worse than 'Bride Wars' I thought John "I'm a one hit pony" Carpenter's 'Ghosts of Mars' was excrementally bad.

To be honest, I haven't seen that many terrible films. I'm usually careful about what I see and I'm rarely disappointed. However, I had the chance to see 'The Fountain' the other day and I was really disappointed. While it was stunning to look at, it was just an incoherent mess otherwise, full of disjointed imagery and pretentious waffle. However, I can safely say that compared to 'Bride Wars', it was 'Let the Right One In' (fantastic film, btw).
The Bride Wars Challenge 04:51am on 04 Sep 2009 Mark, when making your proclamation against 'Bride Wars' all those months ago, saying you would quit if there were 10 worse films this year, you should have made it with your fingers crossed behind your back. That way your pledge would have been null and void, and you wouldn't be in this moral dilemma now. Alternatively, you can just say nuts to that, and keep your job regardless. I favour the latter.
Terminator Redemption? 00:36am on 04 Jul 2009 'The Terminator' should have started and finished with the first film. It didn't need 3 sequels, and certainly didn't deserve a lame TV series. One of the justifications for the sequels - especially T2 - was for the development of the Sarah Connor character, but in the first film we already see her go from being a timid young woman to a warrior (in the factory we see her dragging Reece yelling "On your feet, soldier!"; or the way in which she gives Reece a field dressing when they stop to rest under a bridge). She goes from from being a frightened, anonymous young woman to the saviour of mankind in the space of 2 hours, and we see the changes during the course of the film. No sequel is needed. In addition, the film ends with her driving down a desert road toward a storm, both metaphorical and real; yet at the beginning of 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' she is locked up in a mental hospital, presumably for being crazy after telling the authorities about her ordeal. This is a complete non-sequiteur, as in no way at the end of 'The Terminator' do we get any indication that she is considered insane (the police psychologist only thinks Reece is a "loon"). Frankly, 'The Terminator' needed sequels about as much as a fish needs a bicycle, so for me a 4th film is just plain ridiculous, and merely indicates that once again Hollywood has utterly destroyed what was an original and thought-provoking idea for the sake of a quick buck. If you don't agree, then look at the downright cynical way in which the film's certificates came down with each sequel - 18,15, 12, 12a. I rest my case, m'lud.
