World Cup heaven or hell? 5:05pm on 30 Nov 2009 I'm going to SA this xmas to watch the cricket in Durban and a friend of mine has given me some sound advice for the country. Don't pack valuable into your suitcase - theft from bags in SA is very high, so don't give people the chance. Beware of credit card-cloning - happens a lot. Best bet seems to be the cash-passports offered by various companies. Likely to reduce your losses if the worst happens. Don't go into city-centres - this is where most personal crime happens. And if driving, don't stop if you see an accident on the road, especially if there are "injured" people. This is the most common way of car-jacking to take place.

But saying that, SAs meant to be fantastic and I'm looking forward to my trip!
Skilful decisions needed by ECB 08:47am on 19 Dec 2008 Oh dear - back to form for Mihir - thought after the last blog we were going to see a steady improvement - you really are the Harmison of the BBC sports department! Anyway, just to correct you, the IPL is nothing like the EPL - it is a franchised based competition, with player bidding etc - it is loosely based on the NFL - the only similarity between the two is the name.
Conflicting views on state of cricket 10:22am on 09 Dec 2008 Ordinarily I find Mihir's blogs dull and a bit of a waste of time - I only read them to see how much ire he creates amongst the comments - however on this occasion, this is well written thoughtful piece - I must disagree with the central tenant of the piece though - Cricket has always been an international game - it is just that now it has money attached to it. Tours and touring have always been a major part of the game we love and it is domestic cricket that has always been the "poor" relation. Before the advent of 20/20, other than finals, had a county match ever been sold out? Internationals almost always were and continue to be in England. Cricket is going through a major change - England and Australia are waking up to the fact that India is the powerhouse of the modern game and have to adjust themsleves accordingly.

As an aside, all of those who've been applauding KP for leading England back to India might care to consider if he'd be doing this if an IPL contract wasn't in the offing? Lalit Modi won't be able to prevent England players playing for 15 days now - by going back, England have won a clever political game.
Taxis extend a very Mumbai welcome 4:34pm on 10 Nov 2008 Alison - having lived in Mumbai for nearly a year, trust me, you'll learn to hate the taxi's very quickly - when the front axle breaks at 40mph on the Tulsi Pike Road and the car careers into the barriers, you'll not think the gaffer tape is quite so quaint! But I'm pleased the England team spent some time with the slum kids - for these kids, cricket is everything and if the team can bring some joy to their lives, then their trip will have been worthwhile. It's dissapointing though, that only 5 went - what were the rest doing? Surely a day of the players time spent with the kids of India is the best way they can contribute to the lives of these kids?

As for the Mumbai smell - you're lucky you're not there in monsoon - then you'll really get to know about it!
Arsenal guarded over financial figures 3:05pm on 19 Sep 2008 Blimey - I thought Mihir had forgotten about Arsenal - but no, of course not. For, I don't know how many years, Mihir's been banging on about how Arsenal are about to fail, collapse, go bust etc. Not once has his "sources" proved accurate on this club - perhaps if he wants to know about "kremlin-like" PR machines, he should look at his own beloved Spurs and the way they treat bad news. Arsenal may not be perfect, but they're run as a business which doesn't rely on foreign money to survive, unlike any of the other top 4 clubs. But for Mihir to post this, he might have to swallow some pride.
