Interesting quote although the evidence from 1969 that Grant Shapps cites is a little dated; some of us don't have memories that stretch that far back. I do recall the concern for the poor shown by the Thatcher government some 20 years ago though, as will approximately 30% of the current crop of conservative MPs who were sitting MPs at the time when the poll tax was introduced.

Yes SA rested players. The lions also made many changes, including positional ones. By rights we should have lost heavily. I guess SA rugby lacks strength in depth because 4 years ago NZ could have changed the full 22 and still stuffed the lions.

In answer to your question about a SH 'lions' team, sounds a lot like the all blacks to me (NZ and whoever they want to nationalise from the pacific islands), and it works pretty well.

What happened to all the rest of the SA rugby fans who have been trolling the BBC forums this past few weeks?

Unfortunately I was watching the ball rather than staring at players groins so I missed the incident. No chance of significant damage though, the way the boks played the match demonstrated that the entire team has no balls.

I share your frustration at those cyclists who refuse to abide by the law because I feel this type of behaviour puts us all at greater risk. With that said, the fairly minor crimes by some cyclists are trivial in comparison to the dangerous behaviour of a large proportion of motorists. The only reason I dont have an accident every time Im out is because Ive developed the cyclists sixth sense and I can brake before I get pulled out on or cut up.

I was hit from behind by a van last year in an accident that could quite easily have killed me and since then Ive developed my own set of rules to try and keep myself safe. I should add these are fit for country roads as the majority of my cycling is in the peak district.

1. Its worth slowing down and waving an HGV past at the first opportunity, they appreciate the gesture and Ive found they overtake much less recklessly than car drivers. It's worth rewarding their patience.

2. When the road is narrow and I feel it is unsafe to be passed I dont hug the verge, I make sure Im at least a metre from the verge so that idiots cant squeeze me for room. I figure I travel at the same speed as a tractor, let them overtake me as if I were a tractor.

3. Be very careful when attempting a right turn, its always your right of way but sometimes its worth slowing down and letting cars past than risking your own safety. I got hit when attempting a right turn.

Ultimately we have to manage our own safety because the idiots in their safe metal boxes will put our lives at risk for the sake of a few seconds.

I would take BOD and Bowe from the Irish backs although Bowe is by no means a starter, the rest of the irish backs have done nothing to suggest they warrent a place. I'm surprised at the number of posters who seem to think O' Gara deserves the 10 shirt, bizarre. He was dire in the first half on Saturday, yet again. The only thing that saved him from another hiding in the second half was the excellent Irish line out. I can't see how we can play a 10. who defends so weakly that he needs a minder. He's not even a squad player for me.

I see your arguement about heritage, shooting could make the same claim - I believe this 'sport' was in the original 1896 modern programme. I'd bin all the shooting though, I don't think we should be celebrating the proficient use of a weapon that kills millions - this would free up spaces for more worthy sports. Incidentally I found out that that the summer olympics can have a maximum of 28 sports and 301 events, therefore with this competition between sports a debate on the relative merits is unavoidable.

I like to watch sports where I know the dedication that is required in training, the physical pain, the 6am starts, the 5 hours of training each and every day to excel. Skill and physical excellence should both be requirements.

Incidentally, despite my rants about swimming, that was the sport of my youth. I'm more of a cyclist these days and, working in the peak district with it's many hills, I spent my time looking down on the triathletes you like the flat roads :-D.

It's an interesting point you make regardless. I don't ride horses but I'm prepared to concede that it takes a great deal of skill to "persuade a horse to get you safely over a jump". In essence this describes the role of a good coach. The majority of elite althletes have an excellent coach and the admit that without that guidance and knowledge they would not be the athlete they are. It's a partnership.

I'm unaware of any other coaches being awarded a medal though.

I'm not sure if there is anything more to add after #47. However, it's worth noting that if she is juiced up she must have been a pretty poor athlete in the first place given that she was a full 2 seconds slower than the (East German) world record.
Drug cheats getting comeuppance 3:52pm on 21 Aug 2008 Big big difference between explaining your way out of a positive test result (I think it was elevated testosterone for Mitchell, and these days the test can distinguish between natural and synthetic testosterone so his 'up all night having sex' excuse would not wash, assuming he's guilty that is) and explaining why the testers would not wait for you.

Even bigger difference between the US, who have a history of burying bad news, and the BOA.
