As a whole British society continues to instill a negative attitude towards homosexuality. For all the good work done in schools to educate kids about the existence of gay people/relationships, homophobic bullying is widespread in schools. That seeing two men kissing causes a visceral reaction is interesting when seen in the context of the high levels of violence and anti-social behaviour on our streets. Perhaps some people are more comfortable seeing two men beat each other up, than two men demonstrating love and affection for each other. I would suggest that this visceral reaction is the responsibility of the person having it, and it is up to them to gain some insight into themselves, take ownership of their visceral reactions, not continue to be led by self-ignorance. It isn't about gay people, we just want to get on with our lives and not be abused by people with no control over their visceral reactions.

What does that mean, Jonathan? Which of the other women players do you regard as not being 'normal' and why? Does being blond and pretty mean 'normal', is that it? Choose your words more carefully, otherwise they are likely to be misinterpreted.

All your comment proves is that you have to go back to the 50's for evidence of left wing BBC bias. Also the 'anti' list you quote as the things the BBC were supposedly against can be more compellingly argued overall as making the world less secure, more unequal and a more dangerous place.
Newsnight's Politics Pen 12:51pm on 08 Jul 2009 Contrary to this left bias conspiracy nonsense, the Bourgeois Broadcasting Corporation has always gone with the flow of the establishament of the day. I remember when question Time in the 80's was filled with rightist opinion except for a token 'wild eyed Trot from the lunatic fringe' who everyone was encouraged to laugh at and ridicule when they were spelling out warnings about privatisation, PFI/PPP contracts, and the deregualtion of the financial sector. Nu Lab is not a left wing project, it is a centre-right one, so now we don't have any input at all of left wing opinion. This is what strikes me about The Politics Pen and it's 'blue sky thinking.' Also, there is no such thing as impartiality, people are not robots, the chosen starting point for any discussion, like any hypothesis, is a matter of bias and opinion. Political power is exercised by exclusion of certain viewpoints, not inclusion. All those who supported free market reforms and ridiculed alternatives are responsible for the mess the economy is in, and this will disproportionately hurt the poor, the disabled, the vulnerable. How predictable, and predicted by the left. This is the perspective from which to view half-baked, hypocritical ideas about spending cuts presented on this show.

When the goin' gets tough the Right gets nasty and when it looks like they gonn lose they likely turn on each other. Facebook's founder - too late to cash in? 11:18am on 11 Oct 2008 Some people are not that motivated by having loadsa money and being rich and do primarily get off on what they do. It's an existential thing, their raison' detre. Once you've bought ten houses and twenty cars and been on a hundred nice holidays, cars, houses and holidays become very boring, unfulfilling. Maybe he doesn't need the trappings of wealth to feel good about himself? Maybe what he needs is to be creating code. Good for him.

Great book - shame about the screenplay? 5:13pm on 04 Sep 2008 There are far too many film and TV adaptations of books and short stories, and often some of the SAME work. When they're good they're worth watching and when not (which is more often the case) they are a travesty. This is at the expense of producing original ideas and stories, and exemplifies the laziness of film/TV makers these days. Having said that an adaptation of a great novel is much more difficult to do well than you might think, and requires a high level of skill and judgement. I, Claudius is one of the best adaptations for TV ever, as was Gormenghast. Trainspotting was excellent, as was Christine Edzard's Little Dorrit.
Time for Capello to deliver 2:21pm on 04 Sep 2008 A lot of words to say that Croatia is a big game, you don't say, and 'the honeymoon is over', what are you talking about? Capello hasn't had a serious compeitive match to preside over yet. Best to reserve judgement and criticism therefore. Owen has not been picked because he lacks match form/fitness/sharpness - hasn't Capello made it clear that this is an important selection criteria? I get the impression that Capello does his own thing, makes up his own mind based on what he sees, and knows what he wants and doesn't want from players. What's wrong with that? Punters and pundits should stop trying to pick the team based on their ignorance, bias, lack of any exprience managing football at top level, or for the sake of criticising. Let's get behind the new set up/team and be positive and optimistic. You'll be the first to crow if England do well.
