Player burn-out worries Monty 1:48pm on 17 Sep 2009 "Dash for the cash" is a fine distraction from OUR economic woes? It is a perfect reflection of the cause of OUR economic woes. Bank of America, Merill Lynch, Wachovia, etc..major financial institutions flooding the PGA with dollars for sponsorship, entertainment tents/pavillions, corporate outings etc.. What is the difference of paying million dollar bonuses to employees of the financial institution or the PGA pro's playing under their banner. This contrived, riduculously feeble farce called the FedEx Cup HAS NOT been received well by the public despite the overselling/push by The Golf Channel or others who have long term contracts or are paid to cover the PGA. How refreshing it will be to have the Ryder Cup and dump the contrived "bribes" for player/ fan interest to compete with American football.
Pressure on as top stars feel the cut 4:14pm on 15 Sep 2009 In all honesty...the world golf rankings shouldn't even have a 2,3,4,5....Tiger has distanced himself so sufficiently that to say anyone is 2,3, or 4 is riduculous. Saying someone is #2 in the world makes it sound as if the rankings could change momentarily.
Pressure on as top stars feel the cut 10:11pm on 12 Sep 2009 Scott has achieved a level of success that Rose can only dream of presently. He is discussed ONLY because he is a Brit, not because of his achievements on the world stage.
Pressure on as top stars feel the cut 11:30pm on 08 Sep 2009 Exclusive of the people PAID to provide golf coverage(newspapers, TV, internet), fan interest regarding the FedEx Cup is nil. A PGA promotion to help create fan interest by making millionaires more millions. No one in the 19th Hole talks about it, nor do the men who I regularly play golf with twice weekly("The Swats" has 73 golf members).
It seems that anyone under the age of 25 who wins a professional golf tournament is deemed the "next up and comer ready to take on Tiger and Phil". This is misnomer is also a gift of the PAID coverage, not the public. Rose and Poulter have yet to win in America, Howell and Kim did not win when Tiger was in the field, and who knows what demons Scott is fighting. What an injustice to Jeev Milka Singh, K J Choi, or Rory Sabatini that Greg Norman chose his fellow Aussie and protege(Scott) for the President's Cup given his dismal performances this year.
Solheim drama boosts women's game 1:13pm on 26 Aug 2009 This was as exciting as the Reno-Tahoe, but with team colors. Has there ever been a collection of less accomplished golfers in this type of arena ( only 5 of the 24 had 5 or more CAREER victories and most less than 2). Face paint and team colors...and we will watch anything.
Where did it go wrong for Tiger? 4:49pm on 20 Jul 2009 The constant "tinkering" of his swing ( 5 swing changes in 13 years ) is his major fallibity. Yes, he can dominate ( 10 victories of his 89 worldwide have had winning margins of greater than 6 strokes ) when his "A" game is on, but he can be wild when it is not. His left knee has probably been the major cause of such changes ( 3 arthroscopies and 1 major reconstruction )and in my opinion when he gets the "groove" back - we will see some more of his dominating style of golf. The great golfers such as Nicklaus, Hogan, Jones, Snead et al never changed their swings ( Nicklaus did after his young 40's).
The expectations that the public places on Tiger's performance/domination is unbelievable....everyone has an opinion. Let it rest...33 yrs old - 89 worldwide victories, 68 PGA wins, 14 majors. Many of the4 lesser golfers travel with an entourage - agents, sports psychologist, trainers, swing coach, etc...Tiger went to the Open with his family, a nanny, and a chef. Give the guy a break!
Gunning for Garcia 4:33pm on 15 Jul 2009 Why are you so enamored with Garcia???? Many might say Adam Scott is the best without a major. No question that Sergio is a great ball-striker, Greater ego, and mediocre putter. He certeinly isn't a closer!
Woods ready to light up Turnberry 5:47pm on 14 Jul 2009 How antiquated is the BBC??? 1980's technology in 2009...I have read that much of the world is complaining regarding the "feed" rights to the BBC for the Open...Asia, Australia, the states because BBC doesn't have HD for the "feed". Maybe they will show it in black & white!
Woods ready to light up Turnberry 5:42pm on 14 Jul 2009 Have to agree with upthebarns regarding Kingsbarne...Kingsbarne is more ruggedy- looking but Turnberry is majestic, particularly on a sunny day.
Iain Carter's US Open Diary 1:15pm on 17 Jun 2009 "3rd in the world" ....might as well be 20th except for endorsement money.The gap between 1st and 3rd is so significant, it's silly to even discuss.
Furyk, Toms, Gay, and Westwood could have been considered if the USGA kept the rough high like at Oakmont. The graduated length does not play to their strengths. It gives the bombers even that much more of an advantage.
