Can Mandy save the car industry? It's your call 09:32am on 28 Jan 2009 As far as I can see this package is primarily aimed at encouraging UK car manufacturers to invest in cleaner/greener vehicles. I was under the impression most of them are already spending £billions on this goal. They are all desperate to be the first to have a fully electric or otherwise green car on the road. This package will help secure their long-term futures, and maybe we'll see electric cars on UK roads in 10 years time. Whoopee. In the meantime, how does it help the more immediate problem of shifting the thousands of unsold cars sitting in fields? How does it help the suppliers and component makers whose products are currently not needed by car manufacturers? How does it help the dealers who aren't selling, and the car workers being laid off? Or the steel factories which are also shutting down?...
It is short-term help that is urgently required. Any vehicle manufacturer which has not, and is not, already committing themselves to clean/green cars is not looking after it's own long-term future and therefore deserves to go under. Manufacturers who are already investing in their own long-term deserve help shifting the back-log of cars they already have in order to keep producing. ALL of this rescue package should have gone towards unlocking car finance credit. I give Mandy's package 3 out of 10 - at least he's recognised there's a need for some kind of help. Prime Minister's Questions: What do you want discussed? 1:54pm on 15 Jan 2009 Can I be really irritating and return to the original question about what I'd like to hear discussed at PMQ's?..

I'd like to have the 'Westminster bubble' burst on Gordon's, and Labour's, decision for the extra runway at Heathrow. How does the decision-making process work in order for that outcome? How much notice do they actually take of the objections?

You can come and do your programme at my place of work whenever you like. Great programme by-the-way Victoria, despite others' opinions to the contrary. I like your's and Simon's programmes. Keep up the good work.

Prime Minister's Questions: What do you want discussed? 10:53am on 14 Jan 2009 I'd like to hear the prime minister's views on a petition currently on the No10 website requesting the Prime Minister to re-introduce the zero-rate corporation tax band for the first £10,000 of company profit. In 2006, when he was Chancellor, he scrapped this. Now would be a very good time to re-introduce it. I would urge anyone who runs a small business to get behind this idea and sign the petition on PM's website :-

Your Family's Christmas traditions.. 09:17am on 23 Dec 2008 It's always been a tradition in my family for Christmas day breakfast: Pork pie, fried mushrooms and bread and butter. Don't know where it came from originally, but there's no pressies opened til after Christmas breakie. Is this weird? Regards, Arthur C. Grudfuttle (Leicestershire).
Tax: VAT down and taxing the rich 09:17am on 26 Nov 2008 Can someone put me out of my misery - I'm still trying to figure out how a 2.5% reduction in VAT means a £5.99 bottle of wine is 31p cheaper?.....

Tax: VAT down and taxing the rich 09:22am on 24 Nov 2008 I have to agree with you Socrates, people are not stupid - any money saved now will be used to pay off debts or stashed away to help cover the huge pay-back in the coming years.

P.S. Am I dumb? I can't figure out how a two and a half percent reduction in VAT means we save 31p off a £5.99 bottle of wine...?
Why do we take TV so seriously? 09:52am on 20 Nov 2008 I think the very fact that lots of people continued voting to keep John on the show indicates how un-seriously they take both the show and TV. It's a mistake to assume that because thousands of people voted they 'obviously' take it seriously.

[Just to go off-topic for a moment - to all the whingers - if the subject for debate on Five Live annoys you, just switch over to another station! It aint rocket science! Don't continue to listen to the debate just so that you can be annoyed and then whinge about it on here. You are irritating.]

I suspect there are many more people who don't take this programme, or J.S. seriously than do. (But that is just my opinion.)

Although, I do think pestering the poor man's wife is a bit off.
Sir Alan Sugar 10:52am on 19 Nov 2008 Well said bronpep. I have to agree, that was very disappointing. I found it very arrogant of Sir Alan to cherry-pick only the questions he was prepared to answer. He may be successful and wealthy, but I wouldn't want to go for a beer with him.

It's ironic we have 'zero tolerance' on wheelie-bin violators resulting in fines and a criminal record, at the same time as a tolerant attitude to drunken yobs causing violence and death to ensure they don't get a criminal record.
Can someone explain the logic?
