Liverpool facing test of strength 8:41pm on 25 Oct 2008 Phil, why do you never focus on any other club outside the EPL 'top four'? Already this season this must be the fifth or sixth 'Liverpool' article you have posted. Why not cover something else? Here's a tip: how about Hull's remarkable start to the season - or is that not 'fashionable' enough for you?

It is comments like this one and that about the curling that that make these articles stink of bad, lazy journalism.
Liverpool may fall short in title tilt 3:04pm on 14 Aug 2008 Liverpool will not challenge. They have a manager who is too cautious and until he changes his '0-0 is a good away result' mentality (good for the Champions League, useless in the EPL) they will never be able to live with Man U and Chelsea, especially the former who go out to win every game, home or away.

Benitez is an extremely over-rated manager, too many of the players he has been bought have been very average and an insult to the famous red jersey, and despite his complaints he hasn't had a shortage of cash - certainly a lot more than Wenger has got at Arsenal in the last 4-5 years. Additionally, Benitez's record against Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal is shocking - it is not even competitive (their two celebrated successes against Chelsea came on pens and they got their comeuppance when outclassed by Chelsea last season after robbing Arsenal in the QFs)

Even this pre-season, with the exception of Keane, their signings wouldn't get anywhere near Man U or Chelsea's matchday squad nevermind the first team - and it will take a lot more than Robbie Keane to make them serious contenders.

Liverpool are at least three or four players short of what is required the take on Man U and Chelsea, and even if they got those I think it is seriously doubtful the so-called tactically astute (see ultra-defensive) Benitez could lead them to the title.
Result of the weekend in the Football League? 1:49pm on 11 Aug 2008 I did the BBC predictor last week for the first six games and it came out with Doncaster in 8th as the surprise package. Not sure why there was so much surprise though - Derby are a club a crisis. I think the hangover will be long and pianful.

That said, nothing is ever decided on the first weekend, but I am glad Doncaster got that first win out of the way, it should make for an exciting game when we (Cardiff) visit next weekend.

If you want a result of the weekend, look at Wrexham. Okay, not quite football league but they were so hopeless last season - it is a phenomenal start for pretty much new team up there. Kudos Brian Little!
The best transfer of the summer 3:15pm on 04 Aug 2008 Ross McCormack, bosman free, Motherwell to Cardiff, was subject to 1.5m bids in January - could be the deal of the summer.

Is this a reference to Ridsdale and Cardiff? If so, I would advise you check out the FACTS before making such frankly libellous statements. Far from 'doing the same elsewhere', Ridsdale has benefited our club, by stabilising the financial situation created by a previous owner, got council approval for a Stadium that is halfway through construction (something a previous owner failed to do), and generally made the club a more attractive prospect for potential future investores (if the appointment of Keith Harris is anything to go by).

It is a shame for Leeds fan what has happened to their club, but the continual witchhunt of Peter Ridsdale isn't going to change what has happened. Get over it.

Tales from the transfer market 11:51am on 25 Jul 2008 Good article. It is nice to see the BBC giving much-deserved and much-needed attention to the 'smaller' clubs in our leagues. You get real football and real stories then. It is a refreshing change to Phil McNulty's incessant blogging about the tedious goings-ons of the 'big four'.

Good luck to Lincoln for the new season, and Jackson in his future.

Scolari will ignore Ferguson's old tricks 1:44pm on 23 Jul 2008 Maybe Ferguson should be concerned about how his Man United team maintain their standards.

Chelsea have been pretty consistent over the past four years - it only due to a massive improvement by United in the last two that has seen the dominance change hands.

So the question is: How, with a possibly unsettled Ronaldo, an ever-declining Paul Scholed and Ryan Giggs, an over-rated and grumpy English forward, are United going to sustain the momentum built in the last two years?

How many of the players will suffer the same 'we've made it' attitude that saw them fail to really build on the success of 1999.
Open sores 4:53pm on 21 Jul 2008 Much better. I think you should give up writing about football, you're blogs/articles on that subject are usually irritating and boring, but this and your blog on the cricket last week were at least readable.
