President Obama might be the most releived person in the world about the early abandonment of expectations for the Copenhagen Conference and for exactly the reason you mention.

If anyone is unfamiliar with MSNBC I suggest they surf the website of its owner General Electric first. Make notes on the products it sells from Nuclear Power generation, Windmills, the Smartgrid, electronic medical records, energy saving light bulbs and appliances then watch MSNBC. It is very clearly a 24/7 commercial thinly veiled as a news outlet.

Am I the only person that thinks this displays either Canute-like arrogance or a recognition that at the end of a big meeting at which nothing was agreed the face saver is to all agree on something totally abstract from reality over which none of the parties has any control?

Maybe it will enter common usage. At the end of the next business meeting I attend at which there is complete and utter disagreement and not the slightest chance of a solution being found, I'll close by saying: "Well at least can we all agree that it will rain all day in London two weeks on Tuesday?"

If their ideas upset the taxation apple cart they are likely to be as welcome as Christopher Monckton would be in Copenhagen.

I share your enthusiasm for public transport but your aims would be harder to achieve here in Michigan than in the UK. Our State has no passenger trains apart from an AMTRAK a couple of times a day between Detroit and Chicago and a toy train called a "people mover" around the landmarks in Detroit, That's it for a State physically bigger than the UK. There is not even a train between any Michigan airport and the city it serves. Any ideas?

The question from the author was not to do with whether man-made climate change was a reality it was whether he was, as his wife put it, "seeing pregnant women" when he perceived that attitudes were changing in the US.

I still think that he is "seeing pregnant women" and that Americans on the whole don't care about CO2 emissions.

I don't know who you mix with over here (Probably employees of the BBC and PRI) but most Americans rate Climate Change very low on their priorities if they think about it at all. Even the polls conducted by the Pew Foundation and NPR confirm this.

Also the President has a very broad church he needs to keep faith with. As well as talking about healing the planet, he also said recently on TV that "The USA is the Saudi Arabia of Coal". I'd be interested to hear the results of you talking to a few ordinary folk to test whether your wife is right or not.

It instills confidence in his writing to know to know Richard realises he can't be an expert on everything.
