I think it is the contrary - when everyone avoids talking about the BNP they have been able to gain strength and support in the shadows. When their opinions and actions are publicised it shows them for the unintelligent kneejerk xenophobes they are, and virtually everyone distances themselves from them even if they have some sympathies to their politics.

Umm, basic physics that can easily be demostrated in the lab, or the rather obvious fact that the Earth isn't an iceball that it should be without greenhouse gases keeping it insulated, or the surface temperature of Venus that should be over a hundred degrees lower than it is if CO2 didn't cause warming?

Attempting to destroy the world through nuclear brinksmanship (see Able Archer and the USSRs reaction to it), investing billions in projects to try and gain nuclear first strike capability, invading small countries because it was easier than negotiating with them, massively increasing international arms trading, ramping up world military spending by a huge margin, and funding politically convenient terrorists is hardly a great recommendation for a "peace prize".
Will you pay for a Digital Britain? 7:09pm on 23 Sep 2009 I don't really care about the cost, but think it is a bit silly to add another tax just to fund some program. Pay for it out of general taxation if it is worth doing, adding lots of small little taxes here there and everywhere to support individual programs is not sustainable and creates unnecessary administration costs and complexity. Alternately they could have just instructed BT to get the infrastructure in place and OFCOM to allow BT to increase wholesale prices to cover the costs.

Why men are to blame for the crunch 12:23pm on 29 Jul 2009 I seem to remember a study that looked at stock market bubbles, and which traders made the most on the way up, and lost the most of the way down - this was strongly correlated with high testosterone levels.

Of course if BBC Worldwide could no longer sell those TV Shows, either the license fee would need to go up, or they would have to produce less TV shows. I could see an argument about making iPlayer to UK ISPs more comprehensive, even possibly ending up being a complete library. Making them openly downloadable doesn't seem such a good idea though.

I can see an argument for some of this - PPP being so different in some countries that what is a reasonable price in one location, is exorbitant in others. Probably all developed countries should have the same price though.
Rule change bears fruit 05:11am on 01 Jul 2009 While some of the rules were overly fussy, in general setting these sorts of standards at EU level makes a lot of sense. It is a shame they are weakening their stance here rather than just refining the rules to make conformance as easy as possible - things like size ranges are trivial for example, as you can just mechanize the sorting process completely, and stuff outside the range just gets juiced or whatever is appropriate.

For one thing consider the last 15 years of Tory rule - only once did they get unemployment down to around the 2.5m mark - most of that time it was over 3m. Now it takes a global recession to make things as bad under the current government as the best of times under the previous one (and that doesn't factor in the population growth over those 30+ years, which is about 10% I think, so the 3.6m unemployed under the Tories in the mid 80s would equate to around 4m now, which is well above most projections of how bad it will get)
