My Monaco Grand Prix preview 01:21am on 08 Jun 2009 Just a cheeky second post as I forgot in my post, would just like to add my name to those supporting what would be no doubt a magical final commentary from you Murray if you have the opportunity to do it!
My Monaco Grand Prix preview 01:09am on 08 Jun 2009 Ive just noticed looking at the ranking after the race that there is no no.13 car that presumably should be Mark Webbers car after last season. Is this just the old unlucky number phenomenon or is there another explanation for it?
A greener Germany 11:29am on 22 May 2009 Superb article. I personally would welcome a Freiburg translation in the UK. I really do feel that instead of wasting money on failing old technologies like the car industry we should all now more than ever be investing time, money and energy in creating a new green economy. Whatever party, however you interpret green and whatever kind of economist you are surely with climate change and an increasingly threatening Russia this is exactly what Europe needs!
Economic impact of swine flu 1:45pm on 30 Apr 2009 I was wandering what you thoughts are on the economic effects of a flu pandemic on healthcare and social welfare in the UK? Assuming that as with most infections the old and young are effected the worst wouldn't a flu pandemic remove a large segment of the uneconomically productive part of society that takes up the vast majority of resources, especially in healthcare and has been creating an increasing tax burdon. Could a humanatarian disaster such as this ironically end up being the saving grace of the Uk's social welfare system?

One thing is certain, there is a hell of a lot of talent and no reason on paper and looking at club form why England can’t be world beaters.
Map of the week: Crowded Britain? 02:56am on 09 Sep 2008 Again great article. I wonder with the issue of population density where the countries listed as having a population density greater than the UK come in the international rating on quality of life. I became familar with these comparative ratings that take multiple factors into consideration when in Canada which insidently rates highly. From the list posted one has to exclude small unique states that bear no relation to the UK such a monaco as such social model could never work in the UK for various reasons.

These ratings and their criteria are I believe useful in assessing whether greater population density is desirable. Yes indeed in a country such as our own where food production is in surplus with massive reserve potential and with enough rain annually for us to allow a population double out size to drink and shower regularily with ease, we could cope. However what will be the socal effect. Our houses are already considerably smaller than in countries with low population densities. Space is at a premium in areas with high population density such as cities. The result is building up to house people and people thus no longer having outdoor space and being completely seperated from nature. If population increases all our green land in the areas with the highest need will become grey concrete. Yes we will survive, but what kind of existance will it give us.

Ultimately I think it is time for us to stop measuring our wealth in monetary terms and instead switch to an approach of looking at quality of life. If immagration leads to greater wealth, and that in turn leads to a net improvement in quality of life for the entire population that is great. If however it leads to a greater GDP and annual income, but additionally leads to smaller homes at a higher price for instance is it necessarily beneficial?

Logic would dictate that unless we give up more of our countryside to expand our urban settlements population growth whether it comes in the form of immegration or in birth rate exceeding death rate, will ultimately reduce our quality of life. I would suggest that actually a large part of the problem with large scale rapid immegration is as much about our policy for home building and land developement as it is about social integration and ethnic relations.
Propaganda war escalates 04:45am on 03 Sep 2008 The conflict in Georgia is ultimately one part of a wider plan to turn Russia once again into a super power. In order for this to happen partly Russia must gain control of Georgia again but the wider game plan in to re gain control of Ukraine. When I was working as an electoral observer in Ukraine during the Orange revolution which was effectively a rejection of Russian backed politicians and their politics I was posted to a town called Reni on the south west tip of Ukraine bordering Romania and Moldova. This town was literally unchanged from the soviet era and in the train station where the polling booth was there was an old soviet map of the world still up from the soviet days, unmoved from the soviet days with the original communist printing and writing on it. This map had the USSR at the centre naturally but that was not what was striking about it. What was striking was the roads marked on it. From looking at the map one could see where the power of the Soviet Union lay. All roads in the USSR led to the two places, Kiev and Moscow. Just like the Roman empire the USSR had two capitals as well.

And here lies the true game. If Russia is to once again be a super power it must regain its empire, and most importantly of all Ukraine. Lets not mice our words here, the USSR in reality was nothing more than the extension of the Russian empire with Russian oppression of non Russian cultures and languages occurring through out the period of the Union and all political power coming from Moscow and even ethnic cleansing in the form of the Holodomor, a genocide where between 8-12 million Ukrainians died in an artificial famine now recognised by many international governments as a genocide including the US, Canadian, Australian and Argentinean governments to name just a few. Russia’s game plan is to regain its glory and power and as usual it is doing this at the expense of the countries and peoples around it.

Quite frankly how you cannot use the word invasion is something I cannot understand. I understand you have to be impartial but either Russia invaded or it did not. If they sent their military into Georgia disregarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and in the process firing on and killing Georgians and then occupying land this constitutes by definition invasion and occupation. By saying invasion you are not being impartial you are merely describing events.

The failure to use the term invasion is like describing a man who shot another man in the head in a fight as having stopped the other man from being able to live instead of saying he killed the man. The factors surrounding the shooting such as the fact that he may have killed the other man in self defence is where the impartial reporting comes in. In the same way that you would say kill in that circumstance you have to say invade for the Russia Georgia conflict. Where the impartiality comes in is how you report he circumstances surrounding the invasion.

And finally the reason I am making such a point is that the unwillingness to use the word invasion is actually in itself implying a bias towards the Russian propaganda. Surly it is the job of a journalist to cut through the bull from both sides and describe the facts. In this case surly at its simplest the facts are that Russia invaded Georgia and now occupies two territories in Georgia.

This is further to my last post. Alcohol acts on the brain in a very similar way to these drugs, the difference is one binds to a receptor site directly and one indirectly to induce the same effect. In fact they are so similar that if taken together they can kill. That was fameously proven by the death of Marilyn Monroe.

Isn't it interesting don't you think that Diazepam is a controlled drug and alcohol is not!
