Time to hug a banker? 1:51pm on 17 Mar 2009 Bobby - would you care to speculate as to whether you feel we would be quite so dependent on the city if we had retained, say, our ability to produce coal, steel, ships and so on. As I recall, these industries would have required significantly less investment, in real terms, from the tax payer in terms of subsidies than we are currently providing to the banking industry. Your argument that we need bankers because we 'ain't got owt' else is, therefore, the crystalisation of 25 years of deregulation, privatisation and free marketeering. It makes it doubly poignant given that this is also the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the downfall of Britain's industrial heritage in the miner's strike.
BBC and the Gaza appeal 1:19pm on 26 Jan 2009 A truly extraordinary decision and one which I am sure your correspondents in Gaza themselves must feel desperately frustrated and let down by. They know exactly how ‘balanced’ and impartial the situation on the ground in Gaza has been for the past few weeks.

As any A-level philosophy student would point out, your argument is, frankly, misleading and illogical. Your desperate reference to your prior record in airing DEC appeals is actually quite distasteful and, of course, irrelevant.

By refusing to air the appeal, you are being very partial towards Israel.

Their grounds for assaulting Gaza was based on the premise that they wished to turn the civilian population against Hamas in order to create domestic pressure on that democratically-elected government. Whether they have achieved this by killing so many of those civilians (including children) and destroying so much of the infrastructure of Gaza (including that belonging to the UN) is an utterly redundant point as far as the appeal is concerned, albeit the appeal would not be necessary had it not occurred.

By not broadcasting this appeal, the BBC is effectively endorsing Israel’s position. Fewer appeals (in total, i.e. minus the BBC) mean less donations. Without being too gratuitous, this means more dead Palestinian children. If this inaction creates extra pressure on the democratically-elected Hamas government, it aids Israel’s cause.

That is the logical argument dealt with. I hope I don’t have to spell out the humanitarian one, albeit, as an aside, could you explain whether you feel that Ban Ki-moon’s reaction to the crisis ("I am just appalled. I am not able to describe how I am feeling. This was an outrageous and totally unacceptable attack against the United Nations.") ‘reduced public confidence’ in the UN’s impartiality?

Mumbai horror shocks England fans 1:41pm on 01 Dec 2008 Sadly, it is not an issue about India but an issue with India's relations with Pakistan. The heartbreaking disintegration of that country (by no means limited to the Kashmir conflict, of course) has effectively laid waste to the Pakistani test side too. Of course, that’s a minor issue in the context of a country sliding into a level of anarchy and tribalism on a par with its neighbour Afghanistan.

India is so very different though. There is clearly such an awful long way to go until the threat of Islamic terrorism there reaches the level it has in Pakistan. Until then, the likes of England, Australia and New Zealand, security specialists, bodyguards and all, must continue to tour India, as they have Sri Lanka under a similar level of threat for many years.
