Indebted Britain 5:46pm on 22 May 2009 Implicit in S&P's report is the chilling warning that a change of government could lead to a drop in the GB credit rating. That is a very naughty threat. Does this mean if we get a conservative government, say in 2010 that the rug will be pulled from under GB's financial feet ??
Parliament's reputation brought low 9:19pm on 08 May 2009 It is not acknowledged that the Tory supporting paper The Daily Telegraph has carefully constructed it's release of the mps' expense claims. By the time that the Tory and Lib Dem expenses are released we will be too exhausted by hubris to comment. Go on - shout down the government, but thanks to Tory cash at the Telegraph you are all railing too, far too, soon. Silly people, you have bought a pup.
Nothing should be taken for granted 5:06pm on 16 Mar 2009 Cameron's advisers are very clever. What he has said in the speeches you mention is precisely nothing. He is too late to get the BBC licence fee reduced until next year - but he is paying a little back to Murdock for his nice Med. trip to his yacht last year. As for apologising - he has nothing to apologise for so it has cost him nothing. He must like baked beans as he is very wet and windy at present.
The Goodwin pension questions 6:07pm on 26 Feb 2009 This just gets worse and worse. I hope to goodness that the government is consulting the very best lawyers to see if this scandal can be unravelled. It cannot and must not be left ro stand without there being a fight to try and deprive this person of the reward for failure. The opposition must keep the government to account - and so should labour - until this £16 million is recovered.

I cannot say any more. Like Mr Peston, I am struck dumb by the lunacy of it all.
The narrative of the new political era 9:29pm on 21 Jan 2009 Surely these comment facilities are for the use of members of the public, not card holding, paid-up members of the political parties. I have made 7 or 8 complaints about links that have been included in these particular comments. Most have been shamelessly linked to the Tory party. Please stop it and let ordinary people have a say for once - and you can tell Dave that I said that.
Lord Mandelson interview 8:55pm on 16 Dec 2008 I heard the speech by Lord M to The House of Lords on 5 live, and I must say it made sense. Not too much tinkering, just enough to get the reform of The Royal Mail under way. I hope the union will support this effort. Not to do so will/could result in the loss of many jobs. The support for the universal delivery is commendable, and so is the support for the local post offices. This makes me glad that the dark knight is back. I wonder what the ?? who ever party will make of this. I am sure Dave will have a contrary opinion - he always does.
Intriguing politics 3:55pm on 15 Dec 2008 I agree with Nick. It is intriguing that Cameron should take the high moral ground on those who caused the crash - because in doing so he will implicate himself and his party, because it will high-light where most of their funds have come recently. He is adopting this stance as there will never be an enquiry - it would take months to set up, would cost millions to run. It is plain and simple "I have not got a policy to pretend is new, and Mr Brown has all the publicity as he wings around - so I'll make a silly statement about something that will never happen". The shame is that so many are sending in comments that support Cameron. All paid up card holders ??? All tory toffs/toffesses ??
Massive mortgage squeeze 7:27pm on 25 Nov 2008 Sorry, but you are following the same track as the national newspapers ... formally with...an expert...was known as... All these so called experts are has beens - they did not see this crisis coming, they all grew fat on bonuses. The real problem is that there is really no-one, if they are honest, who can make a firm judgement of the present financial woes. Not even Mr Preston. I have heard flatulent bowels making more sense than Mr Peston. Please, do us all a favour, step back for 48 hours, chill-out and then return to the subject of the economy. You will be surprised and vaunted for your renewed clarity and perseption on the subject.
Paradox of bank bailout 12:40pm on 21 Nov 2008 It is a statement of political belief to keep calling the funds shoring up the banks "tax payers money". It is not any body's money, if anything it is a facility. Tax payers' money will be the profit made in interest etc on the facility and the cash generated from sales of shares in banks "bought" by these facilities, if and when these sales are made and in the mean-time dividends from profits. Handled well, this current situation could be a nice little earner for the tax payer. The middle eastern chaps are not shoring up Barclays for charity are they ?
If the government was a bank, its shareholders (us) would be looking forward to the profits, saying what a great deal this is, and the media would be a lot more up-beat.

Extraordinary 8:46pm on 09 Nov 2008 Many commentators on TV, Radio and in the papers seem to be incapable of accepting that we live in very odd times. Nick Robinson is one of the few that is able to understand the changes in mood/situation in the UK that the recent financial and devolutionary amendments have led to. The Sunday Times has been an example this weekend of a newspaper without any editorial consensus. No clear reporting/commenting/editorial control.
The government fighting a bye-election as the opposition, fighting the banking sector as a major share holder and leading the world on throwing the rule-book out of the window in the name of economic growth though debit. Extraordinary! Politics and finances have become fun, and the participants want the public to understand the fun too. How dreary the opposition sounds in these heady days.
