The return of politics' 'N' word 10:26am on 17 Jun 2009 Nuclear weapons are obsolete as America Russia and China between them and the UN security council will not allow any state to use them. What we have to fear are terrorists who dont give a fig about MAD and who will use them whatever deterrent is used. Put the money into spying and counter-insurgency instead of wasting it on Nuclear Weapons.
Who's watching you? (2) 01:24am on 26 May 2009 I'm not really adverse to dodgy security services reading all my email and listening to my phone calls using the systems that I know they already have. However this socialist government would like to give my town hall access to the same data so that they can pursue their policies of social engineering. I strongly object to systems of state security being used by people with political agendas to seek out and destroy their opposition.
RBS: Stop the flogging 1:19pm on 03 Apr 2009 Its going to take more than a few fine words to apologize for what these people have done to us. Lets see some action first, meanwhile bankers as a breed can be classified as those unpleasant people whos greed has destroyed both our wealth and our economy and are directly responsible for the high taxes we will be paying for the rest of our lives and the cuts in services that will accompany them. Public flogging would not be enough, they have to repair the damage and ensure that it does not happen again.

The financial system has collapsed and there is no political answer either left or right wing. What will happen is that the economy will collapse and then society will collapse. One can only hope that what arises out of the ashes has some hope in it. Bonus culture will soon be gone whatever the banks are paying now. You can fool all of the people some of the time or some of the people all of the time. Information is now free so that this aphorism for administrators no longer holds. They quite rightly shut the refinery workers up pretty quickly but its going to get harder and harder to keep the lid on. I'd invest in home security firms myself, the profits are about to go stratospheric.
BBC Persian TV 12:55pm on 14 Jan 2009 This is a significant and welcome step to enable the BBC to extend its quality programing to an audience who are susceptible to being fed misinformation because of current geopolitical disputes.

The West successfully avoided large scale conflict and was eventually reconciled with the former Soviet Union. Not so much by the use of force but by the people not wanting to continue the conflict. This would have been informed by their knowledge of us.

So it can only help us in this region if the BBC is able to output the sort of programming carried by World Service radio on television. I am very happy to see my taxes spent on this sort of work and would condone more of the same.

I expect the editorial control to be in the hands of the BBC. We can always argue about their bias, but most of the world sees them as balanced and reasonable. No instructions from government agencies should be necessary. Though I am sure they will communicate the British Governments stated position on things like the Gaza conflict along with other Governments statements. The BBC charter gives them a reasonable degree of independence from the establishment in this country. It is State owned but not State run.

Hopefully we will also see some of the programming for the region appear in English here in the UK. It is a two way street.
Your stories of unemployment 11:57am on 12 Jan 2009 My first career was in High Tech manufacturing. It was clear that the routine 10% head count reduction every couple of years was being used to cull older people. It was therefore not a surprise to eventually be made redundant. I am still in High Tech but on the design and development side now. Its still our manufacturing sites that are being downsized or moved. So my current long term advice is that you need to develop skills that put you higher up the food chain if you want to avoid redundancy. Note that "service industries" are just that - services to the food chain.
The New Capitalism 12:50pm on 09 Dec 2008 It is to be hoped that if a socialist government ever comes to power again in this country that the fact that the tax payer owns the banks will make them realize that wealth has to be created and not just spent as the incumbents have.
Wikipedia is censored 12:39pm on 08 Dec 2008 This case illustrates why censorship of the internet is wrong without checks and balances. Eliminating criminal activity is not the same thing as applying blanket thought crime rules. It appears that in this case the information is in the form of a 30 year old album cover image which has been censored by blocking a non-commercial encyclopedia web site whilst at the same time the album cover is visible and the contents still for sale on Amazon. This brings the whole idea of censorship as a method of eliminating criminality into disrepute. I for one will continue to reject censorship whilst it is being applied so stupidly. Given the opportunity I would sack the people responsible.
BBC iPlayer: Your queries answered 1:42pm on 20 Nov 2008 What is going to be the situation with respect to the TV license fee now that regular live tv will be available through iPlayer. Will all internet connections in the UK now require an associated TV license?
Shock and ordinary 4:26pm on 29 Oct 2008 I think that in this case its less that Ross and co did shocking things to appeal to the young than they did something borderline illegal. It is more a reflection of young peoples lack of respect for the law. Even if it is the case that older people value respectful behaviour more than young people this is still wrong. It is not funny to humiliate people for a laugh. We do not condone bullying or racism so why is it funny to make insulting phone calls and broadcast them?

I'm 48 and I still think Monty Python is clever funny, but these two are just coarse fools.
