Treasury patches up regulatory system 10:48am on 08 Jul 2009 We live in a global economy - we can't FIX the UK banking system in isolation. We need competitive banks and to have a global level playing field. Basically we need some global leadership - not just looking at the UK and moaning.
Owen worth Man Utd gamble 4:05pm on 04 Jul 2009 ManU have a lot of good youngsters coming through, Owen is professional and will score in a team which creates chances - he would have been a great signing for Chelsea. Let Real and other clubs spend their money at inflated prices and ManU look for the longer term investments. Owen gives them time and should score some goals.

Looks like a potential win/win with little downside for either party. If Owen cant score at manu he should retire.

A √ Recovery? 1:47pm on 12 May 2009 I agree with the idea (if the shape of a square root sigh is a bit diffent) - a period of low economic growth is ok - we need to restructure the debt; get to grips with global warming and sort out the daft debt-led lives people have been living.

Having a sensible approach to life will help us create a healthier, more equal and safer society - perhaps with people improving their values.

Economic growth isn't the be-all and end-all of life. Rampant consumption isn't the panacia of life.

So a period of reasonable growth as re-stocking takes place (and people stop being so scared) followed by a period of low ecomonic growth - but positive social change would be great.
Hobbling hedgies and bashing buyout boys 11:00am on 30 Apr 2009 You seem to argue that the hedge funds and buy-out boys started this - and then that they are the symptom not the cause. Then you conlcude that we should trust the market - which has just failed (again)not to do this in the future. As far as I can see the Hedge funds make the markets more 'dynamic' - which is not what we want - by driving prices up and down using leveraged positions. Sounds like they need to be regulated - or the leverage needs to be controlled.

Wrt to the buyout boys then this depends whose money they are using - if they using their own then fine - if the banks are lending it then they need to be better at it. If they are raising it from the market then the market needs to be a bit sharper.

There is a case that these add some value too the market - however they need to be policed and have some means of salary restriction - perhaps 90% ratre for people who earn over £1,000,000 ???????????
McLaren await FIA verdict 10:10pm on 24 Apr 2009 Sorry - my apologies - thought this was about Steve McClaren lying at his interview for the England Manager's job.

Didn't realise that he was now making cars; I am sure that Max Mosley can dream up some punishment for Lewis though.

However lost for words that anybody really cares - have you been to a F1 meeting - just sit on a roundabout over a motorway and you'll get a similar experience. There I've said it..................
Reversion to the extreme 3:46pm on 24 Apr 2009 This all came from poor banking practice and dreadful government regulation. Nobdy has a real solution; doing nothing would have been awful; the governments strategy is in alignment with economic thinking; nobody is happy at this situation - talking it down will just make it worse.

We may end up with a saner lifestyle - istead of people wasting money on flash cars; food which is thrown away; big houses with rooms they never go in and too many clothes which they don't wear.

I'm not sure calling Brown an idiot achieves anything - but if you feel better then fine.

The headline numbers are just that - Stephanie should look into them and see where the changes have come from - I bet that the decline in cars is a huge factor in all of this.

So is giving £2,000 for your old banger towards a new car a good idea - if your car is worth less than £2,000 you can't afford a new one. The price of old bangers may go up considerably now?????????????????
The end of a retailing era 10:36am on 31 Mar 2009 The economy overheated due to borrowing; we need to take that bubble out - which is what we can see. Not sure why you are making such a fuss about stating the obvious. Retail capacity will reduce - and is doing so - as will other non-essential manufacturing parts of the economy.

We have gone through the blood letting phase on the whole; the banks are starting to lend again - in a prudent way we hope. Life will go one; bad news has been written off.

Our businesses are fitter; the dodgy ones have gone; confidence will return over the next 3 to 9 months. At that point growth will start; the stock markets will rise and we can all sigh a breath of relief.

However we have to live a sustainable life style; slower growth; less borrowing; less greed and focus on the important things in life.

Like saving the world from our excesses - a BIG GREEN investment would help.
Faulds bites back 7:24pm on 29 Mar 2009 Looks like another case of inept management; probably getting large salaries; who were not qualified to take respnsible strategic decisions.

They set up an IT company - was this a wise move; I don't recall any other financial institution making a success of this (Centrefile ?????)

Started making commercial loans - probably wih little recruitment of experiuenced staff; dabbled in the US market.

Sounds like a set of enthusastic amateurs destroying a company by diversification form it's core business - and then asking for government hand-outs.

And yet the management take no responsibility and have not the decency to apologise.

Why are we not surprised?
Watchdog says markets not rational 7:58pm on 15 Mar 2009 The market is composed of people; who were very rational -as they were allowed to make huge amounts of money for little risk.

So at a mico level firms must be prevented from taking excessive shareholder risk (unless clearly stated) and rewarding individual for short term gain.

At the macro-level the government should be able to spot events such as excessive house prices; huge rises in credit - and do somethng about them. OOOhh - that may make them unpopular - so have an independent watchdog to do this on their behalf.
