How do you spot a future Olympic star? 3:10pm on 19 Aug 2008 Five massive questions at the end there.

Is it fair? That depends. For example, does the child have a choice or is it entirely forced on them?

Assuming they can decide not to continue with the monastic life and pursue a less dedicated and more rounded existence, then it becomes a question of desire, determination and dedication. As you improve, and pit yourself against better and stronger opposition, you'll either want to win, and sacrifice more to do it, or you'll think that the effort is not worth the reward and stop.

Would you be prepared? The start of this answer is the end of the answer of the 'is it fair' question.

You make the decision based on how much you have to give up and how much you'll gain. Good coaching and good parenting will give you an idea of how good you are, and how much you'll improve by if you work and then you have to make the choice depending on the potential rewards vs current losses.

Is sports science advantageous? Yes. But only if the individual has the talent and the drive along with the necessary mental toughness. It won't help create the star. It can help nurture the star...

Can you be puished too hard? Yes. External regulation and observation is needed here to monitor this.

What price? We can't tell you. We haven't paid anything like the price required as we sit here and read your article. Ask Chris Hoy, Becky Addlington, Germaine Mason etc...

You might get a better response if you turn the question around too: what wouldn't you pay to be a champion? If I were given the choice of my teenage years or being 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist like Phelps I know what I'd choose...

I don't believe that the pool is 49 metres long - I reckon it'll have been checked properly not to mention the fact that the swimmers themselves wouldn't want the records if they ever discovered they had been engineered...

I'm not sure Backley's really supporting Kelly here. This article is all about things that might kill her. Jumping off 8-foot walls and landing on one leg, jarring your spine hard enough to need the dentist, taking javelins to bed, trying to eat them, breathe them even!

I'm not sure the judges will let her throw a bag of sugar either...

Have any batsman gone to a hundred unexpectedly following extras added to the batsmen's score rather than the the Extras column?

Has a batsman ever run a three, then another three in over throws after the ball bounced off a helmet behind the wicketkeeper and miraculously evaded all the fielders, giving the batsman 11 runs off one ball and thus allowing him to go from 89 - 100 bypassing the nervous nineties alltogether?

Is 11 the highest amount of runs that can be awarded to the batsman off any one ball or is there a permutation that I have missed?

In the most recent Test against South Africa, Ian Bell got off the mark with a 5. I was wondering how many other batsmen got off the mark with a score that cannot (usually) be scored in the normal course of an innings such as a 5, 7,8...?

What is the highest score that a batsman has opened his innings with?

I've been wondering how many batsmen have scored ducks in the first innings and have then gone on to score centuries in their second? What is the largest score differential for one batsmen between his first and second innings? Has there been a batsmen particularly prone to such extremes of form to the extent that, contrary to the norm, he seems to perform much better in the second innings than the first on a regular basis and, if so, who holds the record for the most sub-10 first innings scores followed by a significantly larger (three figure?) second innings score?

I'm interested in the answers in terms of the history of Test/First class cricket as well as in modern terms - curently playing/recently retired...
