El Presidente 09:24am on 28 Oct 2009 Into all this discussion (again) about our position in the EU, notwithstanding the annointing of the chosen one, there is one overwhelming reason why I support the Union.

For 65 years there has been peace among the members. And that is the reason we're bringing in the Eastern Europeans: to avoid another Balkan atrocity, and to dissuade the Russians from territorial ambitions.

Reflect on that, EU sceptics, and remember that ONLY close engagement works, treaties and pacts didn't work before WWII and we ended up in a blood bath
What RBS's results say about QE 10:21am on 07 Aug 2009 and all I can think of is: vast wodges of money have been fond to baiil out the bankers and try to get us out of the hiole they've dug for us; small sums necessary to keep our society running as a civilised place are queried in detail, trimmed, or dropped, often for political reasons or whims.

I know we have to do this, but it's amazing how the money can be found for this but not to give our old people a pension good enough to live on decently, or the NHS enough to fund properly necessary treatment....

A knighthood ought to encourage a bit of work for the good of the country, especially when the recipients are often the very people that dropped us into this great pile of guano....
The drugs questions 10:25am on 24 Jul 2009 If we were to be logical (as opposed to moralising nannies) we would assess the actual damage the drugs thmselves do to individuals, short, medium, long term; we would note the fatalities arising from such use and place it in the context of all fatalies from recreational activities (mountain climbing, horseriding, rugby, etc). We would also consider the impact to society as well in terms of antisocial behaviour. We would then make an informed decision whether we were willing to countenance such risks to society.

Depending on the decision we would legalise and licence use of some or all drugs; those we thought were too dangerous would be criminalised and draconian measures taken against all suppliers, and good education provided in schools to explain why the sanctions were in place.

It won't happen of course, or not for some time, because there is too much political capital in being tough on drug use, and too much sanctimony from govts of all natures throughout the world

I must agree. And I do object to the Speaker having to be approved by the Monarch and all the bowing and scraping to the peers reminded all us Commoners of our place.

The Speaker is the principal representative of the HoC and thus of all of us not in the Lords. S/he should not grovel before the two other arms of the State

Didn't Straw look a prat as "chancellor". Admittedly the Woolsack is, I believe, outside of the HoL legally, he has still tied himself into a pantomime

Speaker's anger 9:02pm on 11 May 2009 It was bad enough that this non-entity was imposed AGAINST the tradition that the Speaker alternates between the two main parties. It was bad enough that he has proven to be partisan, (probably because he's beholden to the labour party for giving him such a lucrative job). It's bad enough that he appears semi-educated.

But what's worse is that he appears totally incapable of defending MPs when he should, but fights like a pitbull to maintain the unacceptable structure and protect those who have strayed outside its spirit, and to shift blame onto whoever let the light in!
Did Mary Whitehouse have a point? 09:29am on 30 May 2008 Mary Whitehoudse wanted to drag society back to the 1950s and a nice, middle class, Xian, father, stay-at-home mother, 2 children family civilisation. A stifling class-ridden society lacking much empathy and compassion.

Consider why "Kathy come Home" was such a wake up call - nice middle class peolpe couldn't belive that such things happened - especially after the war and the austerity.

Our present society is obsessed with money and celebrity. Our heroes are footballers and people who appear on "Big Brother". We have had at least two generations that were cossetted and lacked little. This isn't solely., or principally, down to the media, it's also down to politicians going for quick fixes. It's down to parents who can't raise their children, or don't bother to.

I do know that everyone wanted to give their kids a better time than we experienced in the '50s (rationing, etc, etc) but at the same time we spoilt them. We have allowed a young society to grow up that is semi-feral with the good kids ganging together for mutual protection, and often too domesticated to go out alone.

There is no esay answer,but saying MW was right is definitely the worng one. As are those people who claim god would solve the problem - see the US: a highly religious society if ever there was one!
