Valero and Vieri: the future and the past 00:23am on 27 Oct 2009 Vieri scored four goals from what i remember at World Cup 98, one i think was an awesome solo effort vs norway in the 2nd Round?
Anyway, he may not have been on the winning team but he certainly earned wide acclaim for those goals.

As for Borja Valero, you've not actually mentioned why he's got potential to be great, you've just said he's got a bit of Xavi and Iniest about him, not really a scout report that's going to convince people he will be a world beater, i've passed like Xavi once before and had a sequence like Iniesta, unfortunately few people saw and it happened once.
How will the Premier League unfold? 8:11pm on 11 Aug 2009 I think this year will be the best Title race the premier league has seen, as none of the teams of had an ideal time of late with all of the Galacticos money banded about, transition and the constant speculation.

However, I strongly believe Arsenal will be the ones to watch this season and I think they will surprise a lot of people along the way and WILL challenge for the major honours, including the league.
Who wins it though, is anybody's guess.

Shearer has to stay and is the only/right man for the job was the general consensus and this is why Newcastle are in this mess.
Mike Ashley despite his spurs roots ran the club like a fan in terms of decision making, sacking Allardyce after calls from the terraces and bringing in the likes of Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan when really, neither had any real chance of being up to the task.

Ashley should ask Shearer to stay on but only as assistant manager and they could do a lot worse than to bring in Steve Coppell or Alan Curbishley.
Either of those would galvanise the club and build foundations for success and Shearer can learn and improve ready to one day succeed.
Europa League has its merits 11:16pm on 20 May 2009 The best thing to do would surely be to scrap the group phases in both European tournaments, and resort to the old two legged ties until the final. It's a lot more exctiting and makes the whole thing more interesting, one bad game and it can all be over for a team, rather than seeing a lot of meaningless, elaborate group games.

It would reduce some of the fixture congestion, though inevitbly, revenue as well, which the big wigs in the boardrooms would never allow.

The Romance of football will win over the pound signs eventually.
Coppell runs out of answers at Reading 1:15pm on 13 May 2009 A fantastic manager and I think it would be foolish for Premiership chairman to overlook him, and with the Portsmouth and likely the Sunderland job being vacant in the summer, who knows, Coppell would be a great choice for either.
Maybe even Newcastle? If Mr Shearer really does think he's leaving.

As for Reading, Curbishley would be the ideal choice, a man with a track record of promotion, battling relegation and establishing teams in the premier league, largely on a limited budget too.
Aidy Boothroyd would also be a good choice in my opinion.

I'd expect Reading to be right in the thick of it next season, as though they will most likely lose Stephen Hunt, James Harper and Kevin Doyle, they will recoup good money there, which would be available and still have a spine of very good championship players.
Brave Shearer gives Newcastle hope 10:42pm on 12 May 2009 Now all of a sudden Shearer's the bees knees!

'High risk strategy'?! He took an underperforming Owen off, who has become nothing more than a poacher at the best of times and brought on Martins with pace to burn, dribbling ability and not a bad shot, I see that as something the vast majority of people would have done, not some brave all or nothing substitution.

Though, I am pleased for Shearer, he needed that one but two games is a long time in football

I think not.

What saw them go down was their failure to progress, it happened to Southampton, almost Fulham and it looks like Middlesbrough may well be heading for it.

A team can't fade into midtable mediocrity year after year, eventually, they will go down, as there is no progress.
Any talented players they have, e.g. Parker will be tempted away to the clubs chasing promotion and few people want to come to a club who on the whole are satisfied with another 11-13th place finish.

Once a club stops ascending, it is impossible to just stay there, progress and improvement must be made, otherwise all the teams below you are going to catch you up and overtake you eventually.

The club HAD to show ambition and they eventually tried, though £10m was still not really enough to help push into the top half and it was with the wrong man.
Rafa's Red Missed 7:29pm on 27 Jan 2009 There is absoloutely no chance i'd swap Benitez for Mourinho, who simply is another man with an eye for stuffing a squad full of mediocrity.

I will stand here quite comfortably and say Chelsea's failure to win anything last season and look like winning nothing this season is down to him and his degrading of the squad.

He spent the summers shipping in the likes of Kalou, Sidwell, Pizzaro, Tal Ben Haim and rarely invested in youth at all, which has led Chelsea to the thin squad now under Scolari's command. Centre Midfielders aside, where is their quality in depth?!

And with Benitez, no one will ever no for certain who was the driving force behind Keane but Parry hasn't certainly let this club down too many times over the years with his incompetence, not that Benitez is a saint, he has made mistakes, especially with being too cautious.
Incey Whingey 4:56pm on 08 Dec 2008 A lot of people seem to have forgotten this is Paul Ince's THIRD managerial stint, of which the previous two have been overwhelming successes.

He led a poor, shoestring budget Macclesfield side from 10 points adrift at the bottom of League 2 to safety and then went on to take underacheivers MK Dons straight up with a cup to go with it.

Give him a chance, there is no money at Ewood park, i would go as far as to say the least in the league and having lost their best player in Bentley with no replacement it was going to be difficult.
Not to mention Ince and Hughes sides play completely differently.

Give Ince a chance, he has done fantastic so far and learned some of his trade in the the lower leagues, though his transfer dealings have been baffling.

He needs to be in charge for the rest of the season and beyond regardless.
Look out doggies, Daddy's home! 7:23pm on 05 Dec 2008 Surprised he didn't go on longer but he shot himself in the foot, he developed a 'fear of failure' in the back of the players minds, chopping and changing incessantly.
It seemed to me one bad game was enough to condemn you to the bench for the next few, which is never the way to go and only smashes morale.

Still, no where near a failure and did considerable well seeing it was his first job, coming straight in from his playing days.

Look forward to seeing him back in the premier league some day.
