Home comforts strain ties with clubs 11:20pm on 04 Jan 2010 INteresting wy of looking at it and hadnt thought of it that way myself.

There is definetly a case for it, am I right in thinking Jo came from Eastern Europe or Russia first, so in his case I can only think Liverpool or manchester must be an improvement

I think the SOuth American players face two choices, stay in their comfort zone and ..... becomfortable in south america earining a decent livng and still getting recongition but just not earning enough to support a small country and play in the champions league.

The biggest problem with this country is the weather and lack of the beach life. There is enough diversity everywhere for people to be content if they want to be but I think the player has to want it and embrace the way of life just as much as the club need to make the effort.

From what I hear nowadays, and having to take some Russians round stamford bridge (much to my disgust) on a tour the players have everything done about it and as one of the Chelsea staff put it they dont need to think about anything but football, everything is taken care of, and I mean everything.

I think the biggest thing for some people is their roots and familiarity, some people just like home and never settle, we see some of the best players who playing for their home club or in a country and take him out of that comfort zone and he does look lost, whilst you have others who dont and adapt. Carlos Tevez is an example, satyed in England, is thriving and seems to enjoy it hear (Im presuming) or he wouldnt of played for three different clubs, there will be things he doesnt like but has probably found other things to offset it.

Football is fickle and the only way you can succeed is by being so.

Everybody has to face it there is no loyalty in the profession of football, only with the fans. The players, managers, clubs, chairman, media, there is no loyalty and as its a dog eat dog business now why should there be?

The pretence has to be played though, the manager has to declare his love for a club when he arrives, (much like a player) and the same way for foreigners when they come to england declare about how they have always wanted a move to wherever. It doesnt last and cant last, there is only one interest at heart really and that is success, either in money or club improvement and trophies.

And the loyalty factor commanded by the manager for the players well of course that will be a given, all managers have to instill this into the players for his own reasons of success, Coyle believes he has close to the finished article in terms of his squad with the resources at his disposal and for obvious reasons he will preach loyalty to the players to keep them at the club and their highest dedication to the cause, if that loyalty wains and the players loose interest then he will believe he is not as likely to succeed.

But when it comes to the individual they will always do what they feel is right, the perspective of how they look at it might be warped compared to a neutral due to money, potential success etc etc,

I think with Coyle he could be thinking he's taken Burnley as far as he can, Im sure he wants a top job one day but the world of football will take more notice if he can take Bolton, a much higher profile club, up the table that will have more of an effect in his career chances than say Burnley. Despite what he has done there, the limited budget and lack of ability to attract players even the likes of Bolton can mean Burnley probably will be relegated despite an obviously talented manager and that could be another reason to consider.

Remember one thing though, this guy has done something fans could only dream of a few years ago and if he knows he cant take them further then you cant blame him for wanting to progress his career, this is a profession remember, they dont do it as hobbies and will want to go as far, manage the top teams and win as much as possible in their careers, which arent a lifetime like most of our careers, how many journalists do you know who have covered news for decades, can we say the same about managers?

If he moves to Bolton the fans will always be on his back but why should he care, he probably has more alligances to Bolton in his heart that Burnley anyway after his playing days and the fans might feel hard done by but thats they way it goes.

That fact is they are only two points behind barca in the title race and topped their CL group so its not as if they are out of either competiton so have a very real chance of winning both. I think that the CL is a little beyond them for now but they have a real chance in the league with barca still to play in madrid as well as having to play more tough away fixtures than real. Im not saying they will win it but its not over yet by any stretch

I think you've been reading too man tabloid papers which have distorted your perception of reality.

Are Madrid really supposed to be winning the league, and not only winning but in style with a team that has been assembled only months ago?? a coach who was given no real time to settle in and has had the fans and media on their backs since the opened the cheque book?

All in all I think the hardcore support would be quite happy with how things are going, most of their tough away fixtures have been and gone and they are only two points from barca, who still have to play many of their tough away fixtures including the derby at madrid.

Underachievers could only have gone to Athletico, booted out the champs league at the first hurdle, sruggling in the league despite their talented team, surely they have the biggest case.

I would be very surprised if Benzema becomes the world star he looked to be at Lyon. I always get the feeling the modern real are not a club for developing or nuturing players, rather a place where players in their peak thrive, sure the younger ones get to play with some of the best player in the world but it wouldnt surprise me if bombed and went to another team and turned into a world star.

Hopefully (unlike some of your colleagues) you will reply to posters and defend your point on real as i really dont think you have a case, not many disagree with me either
Mancini faces Robinho dilemma 11:00am on 27 Dec 2009 No need for city fans to over react, I dont think the Phil has any intention to belittle or put down man city as a club rather express the questionability in which the way the club is being run and also questioning a player who without doubt has talent but struggles to put it out consistently.

There was without doubt a much bigger reception for bellamy than robinho, that was noticeable to anyone watching and surely that is a talking point.

The facts are Robinho was woefully poor and did not contribute to the game like the brazilian star we know he can be.

I think where Phil has gone wrong is with his empathy towards bellamy (beacuse he has some sympathy with bellamy perhaps?) On their day there is no question who is the better footballer,who could contribute more to the club and with Robinho age is also more on his side. City dont need to sell for the money so neither need to go for financial reasons. Start of the season aside Bellamy has been a hit and miss player (never one of my favourites), goes on a great run of games but then messes it all up with idiotic antics, injury or falling out with people. As disrubtors between the two Bellamy is potentially far more damaging to a team than Robinho.

If city have aspirations of becoming a top team then they its players like a raring robinho that will get them there and not the sporadic efforts of players like bellamy.

Clearly the paranoia of some city fans is going into overdrive.

Oh and Phil loooks like that Liverpool prediction is going to haunt you for the rest of your life, emotions getting the better of you? (I take it you have a soft spot for them?)
Paying a heavy penalty 00:32am on 23 Dec 2009 Hope u enjoyed your sandwich, not sure i would with a combination of jam and cheese. I think footballers especially english ones just dont like talking about penalties, we have a terrible track record and it never seems to be something we talk about. I think there are a few players in the world who can truely place the ball in the corner with power no matter what the conditions but i think with most its mentality, all these players could do it behind closed doors but put them in the pressure cooker of a world cup and its a different story. Difficult to practice that unless you get all the english players to stay behind after premiership matches and have penalty competitions infront of a jeering crowd!

On the die hard benitez fan this seems to be the final straw to clutch at the net transfer spend but even that is laughable. What good is a player sold for a club at profit if that money is going to be wasted on players who, dont play, are worse then the players they replaced, or are permanently injured. Liverpool have had over 120 first team players in and out since benitez took over, hardly a cornerstone of stability. He's a good coach but a terrible football manager, he clearly cant control off field but seems to be a control freak who demands to be in charge of everything
Wenger wins in madcap weekend 00:04am on 16 Dec 2009 I dont think Benitez will be at Liverpool for much longer. His whole reign has been a slow car crash waiting to happen. The tinkering at the start, the crazy aignings. Apparently over 120 different players have been registered in and out the team over the past 5 years, that is staggering and no team will have experience and consistency with that sort of turnover.

There has been flashes of tactical ability in his management but overall he has squandered huge sums of money for very little return, the only player of any not who has given a return is torres, so what a 10% return on what he has spent. The latest Johnson who has potential but really needs to sort his defensive game out as a world cup will exploit that, and Aquilani, well this is just typical Benitez. What is going on there. 18mil on a guy who as dipped in and out a Roma team due to injury, has probably only been fit 30% of his roma career and was signed with an injury. Now fit devoid of any creativity in midfield and he spends most his time on the bench. perhaps he will sell him to spurs for a couple of million in January.

And as for spurs, well why do they do this to the fans, i wish the players and staff would stop talking about aiming for the top four just a couple of months into a good season. Its the same old story, although i have seen flashes of the best spurs side for quite some time. The problem is there are still some players dragging the team down, and so many injuries to key players who prop up the team (modric, king, woodgate). And then there is the strikers, Defoe needs no mention but Keane is looking a shadow of his former self, to begin with i hoped it was just a blip but he really seems off the pace by quite some way. He was pivotal in the turn around last season, more likely more so off the pitch than on but it wont be long before people start to think he has outlived his usefulness. And Crouch, although provides a needed distraction to the opposition defence, he seems to look a bit lost half the time and he gets penalised as much as the rest of the team put together and most of it for nothing but it does cause a problem for the team.

Come January I hope we get some decent midfield cover, Palacios needs some competition, I think Bently, Hutton, Pav perhaps even Jenas and some rumours say Keane could all be on their way, I dont think I would be too sad to see any of them go, as long as we bring in the players we need and not just stack positions we already have which seems to be a spurs transfer hobby
West Ham ponder Gold rush 01:16am on 11 Dec 2009 So many clubs with financial problems now. Look a west ham, they are a fairly big club previous owners authorised ridiculous over spending, same goes for pompy who look well and truely ruined. Thing with west ham is they will survive one way or another, they have a o.k squad value, stadium pulls in enough revenue to sustain prem status, you look at pompy though and they are a in big trouble, dont you think? Their debts are huge when you compare to their value or ability to generate revenue, being palmed off owner by owner for no cash, just assumption of massive debts, I guess similar to what Gold & Sullivan want with west ham.

But even bigger clubs, rumours of the Glaziers starting to feel the strain of the financial crisis with difficulty in re-financing the club, the well publicised problems with lack of cash at Liverpool, even Man U are apparently not too deep in the pockets for transfer funds. There are even clubs like Everton who are despite a large fan base skint for money, even Rangers cant afford to pay their manager they are so hard up.

But when you look at all these clubs they have one thing in common. Financial missmanagement. Yet noone seems to pinpoint the people running the club, there might be the odd murrmurs bur nothing substantial and after these people have wrecked clubs are able to walk away unscathed, often to buy another club. Im not suggesting Gold & Sullivan are like that at all they seem to of done an o.k job with b;ham, sold them for cash which is rare especially for a club up and down the top division.

But point being what is the fit and proper person test if not to analyse the credentials for runnig a club, not just whether they have done something a little naughty a few decades ago but whether they can keep a club a club and not run it to the ground.
Mixed fortunes for South Americans in draw 00:31am on 08 Dec 2009 HI, I think your spot on about the lack of midfield creative talent coming from brazil at the moment, and I cant understand this stereotyping of european players. There are plenty of players who can get you on the edge of you seat, Ribery on song can rip through teams, Henry even for a spurs fan was something else, torres, some of the eastern european players have been extremely skillful and there are some playrs coming through. I think the influx of african players seems to dilute it but in reality there is still an abundance of varied types of players from both europe and south america. I think people expect a conveyor belt of top world class players to constantly churn out. If you look over time each era has only a handful of top world class players and if you look at what we have now there is a real abundance of attractive skillful players from around the world. Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldinho, Henry, Kaka, Torres, to name a few who could probably play in any team that has ever played in history.

As for Ronaldinho i do hope he captures some of his form. For me he is the best player i have ever seen, what he can do with a football, they way he played when he was in his pomp at barca was just outstanding. Be interesting to see what happens, such a shame that often the most gifted of them all fall for the distractions around them, so many great players, maradonna, ronaldo, ronadinho, best, garrincha

How many english player have played in the hcampions league final over the past 5 years. In fact Id be even tempted to say that so far this centuary english players have been one of the top nationalities represented in the CL finals.

Just a fluke???? No

England have world clasee players, one in each position, bar goalkeeper. Their problem has and always will be the coehsion of the team.

Please elaborate on your point about Capello. You have no substaintiated evidence to say Capello has done nothing since McLaren, how come results have changed so drastically?

And as for BBC beinf biased, of course, the majority of the people that work here are english, the majority of the articles are aimed at the english audience, and whats more the englsih people pay for it through licence fee. But what you are forgetting is that the BBC website is probably the most diverse in the world, covers all sporting events (Jusr look at the African Cup of Nations) has regular blogs on south american football, done big articles on African teams in the world cup.

If your going to attack a famous English institution at least come up with something that has some truth or plausability. But looking at your other post to blogs it seems that there is a rather large chip on your shoulder.
