2005 and all that 1:17pm on 30 Jun 2009 Great article Ben. Even though you're right in that the England team should let it go, the fans should never forget it. For me it was the greatest summer of sport in my life-time (to-date that is I'm hoping that 2012 will challenge it).

My favourite memory of that summer has to be the final day of the 5th test as I was lucky enough to have a ticket. Pietersen's first six of that day is a sight I'll never forget. In my mind's eye the ball was size of a football as it flew right over our heads. And it was in that very moment that I knew the Ashes had been won, utter joy.

There's no way on earth that this year's series (or any other series for that matter) can live up to 2005, but just knowing how good it was and remembering that brilliant summer brightens my soul on days like when England lose to Holland!
Capturing the spirit of 2008 6:14pm on 11 Dec 2008 In response to Jordan D #2 Tickets for SPOTY weren't limited to people from Liverpool, anyone could apply (I did even though I'm from Birmingham - I missed out again for the third year running but that's by-the-by).

People from London can travel outside of the capital to go to events you know! Just as those who live outside the M25 travel to London on a regular basis for many, many, major events of national importance that take place in the city every year.

I for one celebrate the fact that SPOTY bucks the trend that has virtually major national events in London and hope that its tour around the UK continues for many years to come.

Who will win Sports Personality of the Year? 3:53pm on 02 Sep 2008 "It should be noted that the good people of the capital (including myself) aren't able to attend the event, as once again the BBC has taken the SPOTY ceremony out of London for the "general public". Just because it was held in TV Centre/QEII Centre for years doesn't mean the public could attend. If you guys really want all of the UK public to have the chance to attend, bringing it to the capital won't hurt."

Without getting too far off the point of the thread that comment is beyond belief!! What a typically arrogant Londoner's comment. You do realise don't you that the vast majority of the population live outside the capital don't you?? Rotating the venue around the country allows some of the 52,000,000 people who live outside the capital the opportunity (for-once) to attend a major national event in their own back-yard. Well done to the BBC for recognising that the population of the UK consists of more than 8,000,000 people who live inside the M25.

There are hundreds of big events (sporting or otherwise) that take place in London every year that the rest of the population travel long distances down to the South East to attend - without complaint. But one event happens to do a tour the provinces (much to the delight of the majority of the population) and those who live in the capital start whinging! Its really quite pathetic.

By the way just because it is in Liverpool doesn't mean it is restricted to those who live in the North West of England - you can get up off your rear end and travel outside of London don't you know!

Back on topic though any one of the GB gold medallists would be a deserved winner in my opinion - or Andy Murray if he wins the US Open.
Peter Dinklage: A Very Special Effect 10:23pm on 09 Jul 2008 I have to agree with Mark and the other comments about the Station Agen, it's a wonderful film and Peter Dinklage's performance is brilliant.
BBC Sport and Euro 2008 10:21am on 05 Jun 2008 I read the comments on this page before watching I was expecting something awful, but I really like the title sequence, its fun, exciting and I think by the end of the tournament most people will have come to love it.

I think the accusations of having only premiership players on the screen is just plain wrong. Admitedly 4 of the 6 players shown are from the premiership, but of those I would have only replaced Gallas (with perhaps Thuram) as a representative of France.

The other 5 players shown are perfect choices: Ballack - captain of the pre-tournament favourites. Gatuso - highly recognisable player from the current world champions. Torres - about the most exciting striker in Europe at the moment. Ronaldo - widely recognised as currently the best player in the world. Finally Van Basten - manager of one of the tournaments big teams and scorer of one of the finest goals in the championships history.

To me, that four of those featured play in the Premiership demonstrates the strength of the league (or at least its top four) rather than any parochialism on behalf the BBC
Changes to our new look 09:36am on 03 May 2008 Reinstating the breif round up of headlines is a a good first step, but the general layout of the front page is still not right. (Though the layout of the individual story pages is very nice).
Having the secondary headlines on the right hand side of the page, diminshes their impact, which is something you seem to recognise as there has often been two main stories in the central column. Move them back to the centre where they should be and put the features and comments on the right.
Also nobody has yet explained the point of two massive double banners that take up way too much space. The new resolution was designed as users with larger monitors used to see a tiny area of used space. But now those with smaller screens have a vast percentage the visible page taken up with the banners.
The worst aspect of the new site though has to be the complete inconsistency of layout from one day to the next. Some days whuge pictures and little text, others a small picture and lots of text. Some days almost all stories have an image next to them (this looks particularly dreadful for the stories currently in the right hand column and makes the page look unbalanced), other days only the main story does. Some days we get mainly links to video stories, and other days we get mainly links to text stories. The users doesn't know from one day to the next what they are going to find when they go to the home page - its not right.
The frustrating thing is that the content is all there, but the positioning and layout are so poor that the front page's useability and look makes you less likely to want to actually try to find that content.
