Carl Baker and Stockport - an example to us all 10:01pm on 14 Sep 2009 Paul, many thanks for bringing this very sad but uplifting story to our attention. Similar stories, I'm sure, occur everyday in life but it is the response of Stockport County Football Club and its fans that is really heartwarming.

It reminds me of the reaction of the Forest and Millwall fans when Colin Cooper (then back at Boro) tragically lost his wee boy.

Best wishes to Carl and his family and to SCFC.

Many happy memories of him (and his wonderful hand written scorecards) on BBC TV and TMS.
The summer won't be the same without him.

As a so-called sports journalist I thought he would know that Uefa have announced plans to revamp the Uefa cup and not allow cup runners-up to enter.
