The tweet that slipped through the net 09:24am on 31 Jul 2009 Jabsco79 - harsh on Gibson. No-one was complaining about him last Test when Freddie took five-for and very publicly acknowledge Ottis Gibson for his advice and plans for the Aussie batsmen.
75 years of hurt are ended 09:47am on 21 Jul 2009 Cockneywire I couldn't agree more. Flintoff is a very good player and capable of great performances but he simply hasn't done it often enough or taken enough wickets in Test matches to be considered great, especially for someone of his ability.
Flintoff - England's gladiator supreme 5:03pm on 20 Jul 2009 In fairness to Broad, I think he'll go on and be a top class England player. He already looks pretty good and Freddie, by comparison, had a much poorer start to his Test career. I also suspect Broad's fitness will be better, for longer.

I am a fan of Freddie but, although his is great on occasion (and they are wonderful occasions!) he fails to record match-winning hauls too often to be considered a great bowler and his batting has been woefully under par. I think, despite the odd top-class performance, he has actually not fulfilled his massive potential. For Kallis to have more wickets AND a better bowling average, as well as a 20-something better batting average is too big a discrepancy to be ignored Freddie is capable of great performances but shouldn't go down as a great player.

Despite all that, he's still been the best England player for the past five years and some of his Ashes performances will live long in my memory. I have tickets for the Saturday at Edgbaston and am praying he and KP will be fit!

People seem to really enjoy this blog but I don't think it makes particularly incisive or clear points. Those it does make are a little obvious and besides the point, as far as I can see.

Of course he should be allowed his views, no question about it. Whether, as Charliewebb says, it was sensible to make his views public given the impact they were bound to have is another issue entirely.
Hugely respected, much admired... but loved? 12:49pm on 13 Jan 2009 For a nation that still clings to the outdated idea that 40 is still the benchmark for a Test batsmen to speak ill of Hayden because he was an aggressive player who wasn't as attractive a batsman as Lara (who has?) is ludicrous.

He averaged 50-plus and almost 44 in ODIs, which is superb. If he bothered to read these comments I hope he would be delighted that he got the opposition's back up so much, a sure sign that he did a real job for his country.

England's only player to get near this average in the modern era is Pietersen and we have all decided not to like him any more! All our other batsmen are miles behind Hayden's achievements, despite many of them arguably being naturally more gifted players.

Hayden should be acknowledged for the champion performer he was, rather than belittled for 'bullying' bowling attacks.
On and off 4:51pm on 10 Sep 2008 People wonder why we don't get behind our sports team as much as other nationalities, or even boo them when it goes badly. It's because we have to pay so much just to see them play that we feel let down - financially and emotionally - when they consistently fail to convert their individual talent into successful team performances.
Poulter's chance to reward captain's faith 12:58pm on 01 Sep 2008 I am surprised at the reaction to Faldo's wildcard selections, particularly with those who question whether he should have picked players who play in the US at the expense of the European Tour.

The last time I checked, the Ryder Cup was being played in America - picking the guys who are most comfortable playing there makes perfect sense to me.

Casey was a gimme, so to speak, and Poulter impressed at the biggest tournament Faldo watched him at - I really don't see how anyone can query his selection.

Clarke was perhaps unlucky, but that's sport. He failed to qualify automatically and left it a little late to find form this year. It seems fair enough to leave him out to me.

Can sorry South Africa fight back? 2:06pm on 27 Aug 2008 While Pietersen's start to his captaincy has been, frankly, incredible, I don't think people should downplay the role Michael Vaughan's captaincy had on our current team's self-belief.

Just as Hussain set the tone for a really professional England side, only for Michael Vaughan to benefit from that during his reign, so Vaughan's era has shown England that we can compete - and beat - the very best in the world. Despite a lack of form when Vaughan resigned, that self-belief and knowledge is still with England and Pietersen is benefiting from that.

I am quite sure that Pietersen has brought, and will continue to bring, plenty of other successes and attributes to the role but no one should denigrate the role that the previous skippers have done in transforming England to a position where we can compete (as we never could in the '90s).
