Computing for older users: Patronising or practical? 10:22am on 11 Nov 2009 I think this solution is a great idea and should be applauded. All too often am I contact by a family member or friend to say their (Windows) machine is running slower and slower. I've replaced a number of machines with Ubuntu and so far, I've had no further complaints, probably because they've managed not to install spyware, adware or other 'free' utilities.
I also get these people forgetting how to achieve something because they don't do it often enough, or its really over-complicated for what they want. This product seems to address that by putting a straightforward front end on top of the confusing menus meaning that the core tasks are there at hand. If that goes some way to eliminate the fear-factor so many seem to suffer, then that is nothing but a good thing.
I'm just surprised at how much their charging!

A browser-free Windows 7 4:13pm on 25 Jun 2009 I don't blame MS for doing this one iota. You shouldn't be able to force one company to provide free advertising to other vendor's just because they're the dominant force in the industry. May this would have been valid 10 years ago, but these days, Mac OS and Linux are eroding Microsoft's market share, but we don't see the boys from Cupertino being forced to advertise alternative browsers, despite having no option but to buy OSX when you buy a Mac.
It would be the same as forcing Ford to offer Vauxhall Screenwash in their car's on delivery. Something that's pretty useful to have in a car, but not essential to make it go, and something most people couldn't care less about.
I think Europe arn't happy that they're not going to keep using MS as a cash machine, and Opera arn't happy that their browser isn't going to get the free advertising they think they somehow deserve.
I find Opera's approach an affront, and as such, despite them having the best browser for Windows Mobile devices, I have made the conscious decision to uninstall the product and use alternatives.
Network storage still not consumer-friendly 1:14pm on 14 Apr 2009 I bought an old Iomega network hard drive about 5-6 years ago now, which was great for carrying around files, but was no use for my storage requirements.
I wanted something that would be 'always on', offer redundancy in case of disk failure, have ubiquitous access from any device and offer easy expandability.
Having searched high and low, no manufacturer could offer me a 'home solution' at a sensible price point - my requirements veer into the range of corporate systems which start at £1000+ and that was for basic elements.
So, I settled on linux. £300 for a bunch of SATA drives, a hot swap caddy and a SATA controller and I was away. 1TB of storage with redundancy, plus, because I'm using software RAID, all I need to do is add more disks and expand the storage. Plus it means that my Windows & Linux PC's, Xbox 360, Windows Mobile and any other devices can see the media. Plus, using HTTP/FTP I can get at it from around the world (all be it slowly with our crappy ADSL lines). So, my solution fits my needs, but it is a shame that you seem to need to be an experienced sysadmin to get this solution - when will manufacturers fit my requirements with a home solution?

Now I'm trying to address my next problem - backing up 700GB of data remotely, in case of fire/theft/Act of God.

BBC iPlayer on Nokia N96 mobile phone 12:45pm on 09 Sep 2008 Its a shame there seems to be no incentive to deploy this to Windows Mobile Devices. With the vast array of devices running WM, there would be a good user base for the beeb to reach out to.

Also, if I remember correctly, the BBC were supposed to be working with Microsoft to bring iPlayer to the Xbox360 - has this fallen by the wayside?
