Ryan King! 5:32pm on 14 Dec 2009 The ubiquitous 'SPOTY' award is now as irrelevant as the 'Honours List'. Really has nothing to do with recognising the best sportsman/sportswoman, but rather the most 'popular/who hasn't won it before/who do I owe a favour to?'. It started to go downhill rapidly when that Royal jockey was given the award a couple of years ago.
Maradona singing in the rain 5:10pm on 14 Oct 2009 Maradona's reaction to the last-minute win against Peru underlines his heightened state of anxiety. He is patently inept in role. However, as others have said, in spite of Maradona's visisble lack of competence and leadership, Argentia will qualify, albeit by the back-door route.

For what it's worth, the quality of the Peruvian national team has decreased significantly in recent years. Even Wales could beat them now, although Scotland couldn't.

We clearly seem to have lost track of what the fundamentals of the Olympic Games was about.
Ferguson revels in classic win 12:12pm on 21 Sep 2009 Hughes deserves an explanation as to how almost 7 minutes of extra time were allowed by Atkinson et al. He won't get it though - strange refereeing happens at Old Trafford that often defies belief.

Wonder how Ferguson would have reacted had City had scored in extra time, and what vitrolic commentary would have issued from his lips?
Semenya's sex test explained 3:44pm on 11 Sep 2009 There is no doubt that the sports authorities in South Africa were aware of the 'uncertainties' around her gender. That they chose to ignore the opportunities to support or refute these 'uncertainties' prior to any major comoetition speaks volumes to their culpability. Now that all has been revelaed, they are crying foul.

The only 'stain' on the entire proceedings was the continued debasement of the cap collection being gifted to Beckham. Capello brings him on after 78 minutes, merely to appease Beckham's ego and satify the media frenzy. Beckham will not have a role in the World Cup, so surely a player who is likely to feature in South Afrioa should be given the opportunity to play.
Bilic barbs inspire Capello 4:39pm on 09 Sep 2009 With reference to John Terry not wanting in a 'war of words' with Mr. bilic, I can certainly understand why. In any 'war of words', Mr. Terry is the ubiquitous unarmed man!
Maradona learning the hard way 6:11pm on 07 Sep 2009 What did Maradona ever offer Argentine as a manager? He could perhaps provide his strong experience on drugs and alcohol abuse and cheating, but in terms of leading Argentina to World Cup glory, his tank is empty.
Argentina has only itself to blame for its current dilemna.
Life in the old dogs yet 4:57pm on 31 Aug 2009 It is becoming increasingly apparent that too often, match officials are having too much influence on the outcome of games, mostly through 'inconsistency of application'. Over the weekend, both Mike Dean and Howard Webb appeared to 'favour' both Manchester teams with key decisisons. This lack of consistency must be galling for all club managers and players, but increasingly so if they see a bias being exercised against them.
On the positive side, I also watched Steve Bennett on Sunday. He had a good game.
Stuttering start for Benitez 12:01pm on 17 Aug 2009 Liverpool lost because (a) Tottenham were clearly the better team and played with more passion, (b) they were out-managed and (c) there is no depth to their squad. Gerrard had a shocker, Voronin is nowhere near EPL standard, and Torres was very well contained by King et al.

For Benitez to claim 'foul' over not being given additional penalties sums up his day. Unless additions are made before the end of the transfer window, Liverpool may very well struggle to finish fourth.
