1) In ALL EU nations, citizenship is granted to all those whove been here after (it varies by nation) 7-10 years, with permanent residency as the misddle step; roughly the same as the US system.
2) If you are poor - as 30% of the US population are, chronically so - there are NOT the opportunities for the more fortunate amongst us - same as everywhere else. It is ridiculous myth-making to pretend otherwise, there are simply to many handcaps of disadvantage in healthcare, housing, contacts, education etc
If you're saying the US DOESN'T hjave a class system, how come Paris Hilton's life will always be significantly sweeter than the kiids in the Detroit projects.

Would an attack help McCain? 8:46pm on 24 Jun 2008 @ david cunard: you REALLY don't understand the current state of play in the UK - because yes I have travelled (and worked) a fair bit in the US and it, culturally and multiculturally, bears NO context relation to how it hangs in London, right now.
Firstly - INCOMERS??? HUH? the clear majority of UK blacks were born and bred here - it IS their home, the only opne they know. THOSE were the people the priginal online questioner referred to, ditto our anglo-indian community. Ast he adviser could only have known, unless he was 100% dim.
Everyone knows there's a contextual undercurrent there harking back to Woverhampton/Powell days - and again, that phrase evokes ugly folk memories. Equally we all know that he'd NEVER have said that of his fellow Oz incomers, or any white immigrant group. In fact, the question would never be put, becuase johnson hasd only offended black and Asian racial groups.
I don't think the bloke's necessarily a racist - he's an immigrant himself - i do think he is a cynical, reactionary gallery-player, and got caught out, badly. context is all - ours means, there's certain statements that are simply utterly, totally unacceptable (sez Streatham and Brixton).

1) echoes of worst powellesque ranting of the 60s
2) he'd NEVER say that about white incomers, of whom we havve plenty (he should know, he's one himself, and london has no shortage of Aussie's)
3) as he surely knew, London is too much of a multicultural hybrid sorta city for such comments to be tolerable.

I'd be wary of those polls.
as the labour party discovered to their cost, in 1983, 1987, and 1992, what people say in an opinion poll may vary dramatically to what they do in the privacy of the polling booth.
3 times thay had ginormous mid-term leads, 3 times they got whupped in the general election. The only poll that matters is the one in November .
3 times they said health, education and social services were the key issues; and 3 times they votesd for the party (the Tories) that didn't give a stuff about those things, but which cut taxes.

and how will they support themselves economically? (forget about the oil, big bro to the south will never let it happen, and besides which the big Oilco's already own most of the action in that area).
The fact is - and I speak as a resident of Saaf Laahndan - the south east pays for most of the UK.
We will economically benefit from cutting Scotland adrift. Scotland won't. A future as an EU handout-junkie doesn't sound that hot to me.
