Brown agrees to debate 3:20pm on 03 Oct 2009 So now we're to have the next general election reduced to the level of a one on one politcal bunfight, debates of this nature might send shivers of anticipation down the spines of political hacks but at what cost?

We're moving from an inherently flawed model of party politics that's been rightly complained about for years, to an even worse one of personality politics. Might make for good television doesnt make for good government.

If we're going back tot he charging for stuff model then isnt it time the subjects of the news got to profit from their appearance in it. After all if I wake up one morning and find I'm top billing on the front page I feel its only fair I should get a share of the revenue from it..
Charging for online news 3:14pm on 07 Aug 2009 Last I looked no one forced news international to compete in the on-line news field. The BBC is paid for by licence fees it has a web presence. Unless he took temporary leave of his sanity he was well aware of that. So dry your eyes Rupert.

Im no fan of the licence fee but Id willingly pay double it if it saw Murdoch and his media empire withdraw their mindless tat completely from the UK.

When a new announcement isn't really new 01:49am on 15 Apr 2009 We have a large number of people suffering the effects of long term unemployment, failed job creation schemes, derisory training provision and advice from 'job advisors' (who couldnt find a real job themselves if it kicked them in the backside).

Having ended up succumbing to depression or anxiety disorders, they then find that what laughably passes for care in the community mental health provision is of negligible use, oversubscribed and with waiting lists of upto a year if they're lucky.

If you wanted to force people into self medication thru alchohol abuse, you couldn't have come up with a better method.

And now those self-same complacent ministers who have presided over this want the victims of their useless policies to magically jump up and cure themselves?

Removing their alchohol dependence is merely unpeeling the first layer of a very large onion. Unless the govt are willing to invest the cash to deal with their underlying problems they'll simply put people who have learned to cope (however badly) through extreme hardship for no meaningful gain other than the chance of a soundbite.

Could we save billions by legalising drugs? 12:55pm on 11 Apr 2009 I couldnt care less what anyone shoves up their nostrils into their veins or down their throat

Instead of "protecting people from themselves" which current policy isnt even acheiving, how about protecting those who have no interest in taking them but find themselves the victims - either personally in terms of burglary robbery and muggings from the users, or indirectly from their business going down the tubes because it cant compete with a rival that's being subsidised by dealers in order to launder money and has no real need to turn in a genuine operating profit?

Pointing to the tobbaco smugglers etc is a red-herring. Unless the govt planned to levvy excessive amounts of fund raising duty as they do on tobacco and alchohol there simply wouldnt be the same opportunity for smugglers to enter the market with a cut price version.

Make the stuff to a national standard supply it as an on-request-no-refusal prescription to any over 18 from pharmacists (or a licenced recreational drug vending equivalent if pharmacies have some moral objection to getting involved). Not only cuts out the opportunity for dealers if theres no big profits to be made but also keeps the users in regular contact with the NHS.
Jade Goody's death 9:19pm on 27 Mar 2009 #154 its not snobbery its a simple request that the BBC, who we as licence payers have freed from the numbers game of commercial imperative with our hard earned cash, stop the hammer and tongs 'how low can we go' battle with commercial networks for who can get the biggest ratings and return to delivering quality programming and quality news.

Its not just the news content thats aflicted. We need a move away from the hour upon hour of derivative shows that simply mirror commercial offerings, the high salaried 'personalities' whos profile is only high because of their employment by a national broadcaster in the first place.

Not to mention the downright embarrasing spectacle of even the most minor of their staffers lining up to carve a name for themselves (and a slice of the 'celebrity' action) almost as soon as they get a byline. Everyone from the weatherman to the continuity announcers on kids TV.

As for the diana coverage I'd have complained about that too - theres a line between legitimate news and pandering to the shallow self-indulgent "oh the humanity!!" greif-by-proxy brigade.

Its not even a fine line that might prove hard to balance on, its verging on an ocean.

If the best BBC blogs have to offer is self justifying patronising PR spin perhaps they should reassess the value of those too
