Why America deserves three cheers 9:57pm on 21 Jul 2009 Those wanting to keep themselves informed about the European space program should visit www.esa.int where they can find out about the European Space Agency and the ATV "space truck" that if all goes as well as it's test flight will be the main supplier to the International Space Station when NASA's shuttle goes out of service.
You could also check out www.arianespace.com to see about the world's most successful commercial satellite launch service provider.

How long will China finance America? 09:14am on 15 Jul 2009 Yes it is not in China's interest to make the US go cold turkey but it will have to put US in rehab. It will mean China's reserves lose value but that will be the it has to price to pay for a more healthy global economy. The US will find it's standard of living and it's position in the world falling. The really big Q is how will the US react to a (lets take a guess) 20% reduction in average living standards. The truely wealthy will remain so as will the truely poor but the majority will see a big hit whern the US finds it's biggest export (ie dollars) in less demand.

'Obama is a Quaker' 09:32am on 06 Jul 2009 Interesting suggestion that in his heart Obama is a Quaker. I've always thought that Quakers were peaceful and consientious objectors during war time. Would a Quaker be able to order military action or feel comfortable with his finger on the nuclear button?
As an aside lets hope that meeting in Russia will result in real and meaning full reductions in nuclear weapons.

Republicans' lack of leaders 09:55am on 25 Jun 2009 The 2012 election will be for Obama to lose not the republicans to win. Obama has the advantage of incumbency and the election will be in large part a referendum on his performance. It's too early to say whether or not he will be defeatable in 3.5 years time and remember there are always Harold MacMillan's famous "events, dear boy, events" waiting out there.
I suspect that the Republicans might give Mike Huckabee a run. He's presentable, and will appeal to the conservatives without being as scary to moderates as Sarah Palin. A Huckabee run would give the party the opportunity to say to the conservatives "you had your chance" while Huckabee could be persuaded to choose a younger moderate VP and so present an "heir apparent" for 2016 to the nation and give him/her national exposure. Jindal could be a long term bet if he can put his disasterous "state of the nation" response behind him.

Big week for healthcare 1:54pm on 24 Jun 2009 A quick question....
What happens to an individual in the US if his health care insurer goes bust? (if it could happen to AIG...)
I assume that a fit healthy young person would have no problem transferring to another insurer but what about the old or the sick? If someone is undergoing a lengthy and expensive course of treatment they would hardly be the sort of customer another insurer would want. Would their treatment be stopped? Would the govt step in to take over the cost of treatment? Would the law force other insurers to take on the customer even through they didn't want to as he would just go on the books as a loss?

Big week for healthcare 09:44am on 24 Jun 2009 Now that the US govt has underwritten and/or nationalised in whole or in part much of the financial services industry which underpins the private health insurance companies and has also "rescued" the car manufacturers who had large health care commitments it could be argued that large numbers of americans now have de-facto governement health insurance.
