Monty pencils in Celtic Manor dozen 1:04pm on 02 Sep 2009 In my opinion this is a stupid announcement by Monty. He has chosen his team and if they perform as expected over the next year, there will be limited opportunities for anyone else. How does that make someone with aspirations of playing in the Ryder Cup (but not in immediate contention) feel?

Surely a better ploy would be to openly declare that all 12 spots are up for grabs and that he will pick his team based on form. This will get everyone competing on a level paying field and will give an incentive to emerging pros on tour that they could realise their dreams.

Instead he is telling Sergio that he's a shoe in unless he has a rubbish year.

The Watson Open 1:12pm on 23 Jul 2009 I don't agree that Westwood will bounce back and win a major. His time came and went I'm afraid. You can be the best ball striker in the world but if your short game ain't up to scratch (Westwood) and you can't putt (Sergio), your game won't stand up on the biggest stage.

Gutted for Chris Wood also. He came within a minute distance of the playoff and was easily playing the best golf of the contenders. I think he would have had a big shout had he sneaked into the playoff.

No time for Stuart Cink I'm afraid. He will not win again on this stage and his victory reminds me of Todd Hamilton's. Nice guy but not a highly skilled golfer. Also, would it have hurt him to let Watson walk up the last first and enjoy the crowd's attention? I think that would have been a lovely gesture for Tom, who let's face it, had everyone apart from Mrs Cink and the kids rooting for him!
Lions winners and losers 12:47pm on 22 Apr 2009 We are blessed with so much talent at scrum half that I can't help feeling this is one area we are lacking. Peel, Blair and Cusiter are better and more experienced 9s than O Leary and Ellis.

I am also concerned about fly half. Taking two is a gamble, but the fact that one of them is Ronan O Gara is very concerning. He is not a Lions test player and if Jones is injured there will be a gaping hole in defence that the quick footed Boks will exploit all day. Granted there aren't too many other options, but I would have thought someone like Hook offers genuine match winning ability, and has more presence in defence.

Henson would have been a perfect addition to the squad, providing cover for full back, centre and even outside half if required. Its a shame he got injured, but I can see him making the trip anyway.
Warren gambling big with Khan 7:43pm on 13 Mar 2009 Warren would appear to be making a massive risk with this fight, which poses two important questions:
1) Does Warren know something we don't with regards to Barrera's current ability?
2) Is Khan now yesterday's news in Warren's eyes, now that he has the lucrative olympic boys under his wing?

I personally hope that MAB makes a good account of himself. I would hate for him to get battered around, a shadow of his former self, with Khan claiming he has beaten a legend. The fact is that MAB in any sort of form beats Khan every time and twice on Sundays.

I also think that if Khan was to get shot at Marquez, it will be a joke of epic proportions. He will have done nothing to warrent a shot at the title and the best lightweight in the world. There are many more who have put in ring time with better opponents who deserve their shot a lot more than Khan.

I suspect that Khan will win on Saturday, and will once again start believing his own hype. But rest assured, Marquez would destroy him, and I will be exremely happy when he does.

I can't believe as a boxing fan you are advocating the fact that it would be acceptable for Joe Calzaghe to not fight Bernard Hopkins. Yes the first fight was rubbish, but it was very close. If Joe wants to be considered a legend, he needs to get past his 'no rematch' policy and show the world that the result the first time round was valid. I personally think Hopkins would win a rematch. He is a wily operator and will prepare vigilently for their next encounter. A rematch with Hopkins would be infinitely more pleasing than a fight with Dawson, who frankly has not proved himself worthy of a mega fight.

Like you I am also looking forward to the fight between Pacquiao and Hatton, but the result will largely depend on what weight the fight is at. Ironically, I think it would be to Pacquiao's advantage if the fight was at 147lbs, as Hatton has always struggled at this weight. I would like to see the fight at 140lbs, and I reckon Hatton would edge it.

Also agree that shot legends should be calling it a day. If Oscar De La Hoya lines up another superfight in 2009 he is only robbing a genuine prospect of much needed exposure. This sort of thing can only damage boxing.
Boxing's laureate riles Malignaggi 12:55pm on 20 Nov 2008 For all his talk I actually like Paulie Malignaggi a lot. I usually can't stand the trash talk you get before some fights but you just can't take Paulie seriously.
During the Cotto fight he showed so much guts and determination, especially after being cut so early. He's never ducked anyone (unlike some other light punching fighters......) and deserves some respect for that.
I think most people see this as a walk in the park for Hatton but I for one hope this is a close contest. Its a clash of styles that could lead to an interesting series of fights.
Perfect time for Joe to go 1:30pm on 10 Nov 2008 I have no doubt that the following will generate unparalleled abuse in my direction, but here goes (!)

1. Calzaghe is not an entertaining fighter., nor has he a charismatic personaility (not his fault). He is an excellent boxer, but has fragile hands so doesn't knock people out. Contast this with Hatton...the Americans love him because of his personality and boxing style.

2. Boxers don't arrange their fights (unless they self promote) - promoters do. Boxers who aren't exciting do not make promotors any money, so they don't get the 'prize' fights. Hopkins/Jermaine Taylor demaded more money when they were planned to meet Joe years ago....quite rightly in my opinion cos Hopkins/Taylor were the draw.....not Joe.

3. Calzaghe's 'showboating' may well have been an attempt to convince the viewing public...particularly the Americans...that he is an entertainer. Sorry....but shaking your arse an sticking your chin out in front of a half blind former champion is disrespectful and stupid. He didn't do himself any favours......and I'm Welsh.

4. Please god man retire. You have convinced yourself that you are a legend so what does it matter what I or anyone else thinks.
Perfect time for Joe to go 11:37am on 09 Nov 2008 I am welsh and I love boxing, but I too am finding it difficult to admire and respect Joe Calzaghe after last nights 'fairytale' fight.
I was actually quite appalled by the way he danced and goaded Jones. It was bad enought that he was doing it to a washed up former champion who should have hung up his gloves after the first Tarver fight. But to prance in front of him when Jones couldn't see out of his leading eye I thought showed a total lack of respect on Joe's part.
Sure in his prime Jones goaded his oponents on, safe in the knowledge that they couldn't touch him, but he seemed to do it with a touch of class. Calzaghe just looked like an idiot last night.
For me he will never be remembered as a legend. He will be remembered as a fine boxer who had a good record. Legends go in against the best and they usually have losses on their records.
I would have more respect for Joe if he fought Jones and Hopkins 6 years ago and lost (which I think he would have done) than merely add their names to what before then a fairly average resume.
As an aside, I was reading Frank Warren's article in the Sun yesterday - Is it true that Joe has pulled out of 12 world title fights? What a legend!
