Cabot Circus: Are you singing Happy Birthday? 1:51pm on 26 Sep 2009 Sorry, I don't like Cabot Circus. Just my opinion but I don't like the architecture and find it oppressive. I don't feel comfortable there.

I used to prefer Broadmead and the Horsefair to Cribbs Causeway. If in town (usually for business) I use The Galleries (Now trying to rebrand as "The Mall").

I now use Cribbs Causeway, which I have always called "The Mall". I try to avoid busy periods. I find it more relaxing and pleasant to visit. M&S particularly has most of what I need and the customer service is excellent. (OK I'm biased as my sister's company trained them).

Parking and traffic on the new roads round Cabot Circus mean I rarely venture into the centre of Bristol now. When I do, I use the bus - not ideal for shopping. Any proposed "congestion charge" would see me desert Bristol centre entirely.

I also saw tonight's Labour broadcast - So negative and scaremongering - and all they have left at the end is a washed up comedian - and no - I'm not talking about Brown....

Worthy or wasteful? 11:05am on 21 Apr 2009 I echo the remark by MarkJBaker (Post #10).

Everyone should read "Systems thinking in the public sector" by John Seddon, and his other book "Freedom from Command and Control" to understand why Government targets and not only not helping, they are actually DAMAGING.

I fear that attempts to "Save" money will lead to more of the same and do even more damage.

And it is not just in Government. I have consulted for years in private industry and have seen as much (if not more, in some cases) waste there.

My latest role, in a local authority, gave me hope that things can be different. We have seen the start of a business led rather than a centrally imposed improvement process which I hope will bear fruit.

Sadly, as someone else has said, starting improvements and saving money does take investment, which is not there. There is no budget to pay for my time (although my client hopes to get me back to do some specific work).

Until the Government gets rid of its obsession with Targets and Command and Control Management, I fear the savings, which are there in abundance, will not emerge

The USA have shown the way.

Indeed - What did he say about Cameron? Something about "No time to learn on the job" and his "Experience".

And here we are, finding that Mr "Experience" has wasted billions on VAT cuts which anyone with half a brain could see would not work, and the Cameron loan guarantee is what is needed.

And he says an election is "the last thing on his mind". I bet!!

Hopefully he'd be wiped out.
Winter of discontent 09:51am on 02 Dec 2008 I have yet to find anybody, apart from Brown and Darling who thinks the VAT cut is anything other than a costly inconvenience which will do no good in the short term and cost us all in the long term.

The lack of common sense and thought beyond the sound bite in this Government is staggering.

I am currently reading a book by Professor John Seddon.

"Systems Thinking in the Public Sector", published earlier this year, shows graphically how and why the current fad for target driven command and control management in central and local government is leading to waste and cost for us all, as well as demoralisation in the public service.

I am tempted to use my VAT saving to buy a copy of this book for GB and team.

Oh, I forgot. There is no VAT on books (yet) so there is no VAT saving to spend!

A question....

Would that be a better use of funds than this temporary cut in VAT, which most folk I speak to can't see working and just ADDS to small business costs?
Woolworth into administration 6:19pm on 26 Nov 2008 Sadly, a sign of the times. I can remember when Woolworths was the main non-food shop in the little market town I was brought up in.

If you wanted anything you couldn't get anywhere else, it was Woolworths, and you usually got a quarter of Pick'n'Mix on the way out.

I can remember getting most of my DIY stuff and a few singles (remember them) there in the 70's

It has lost its way in recent years. I have popped in a couple of times, but found it confusing and with long queues.

I think it was Sheila Hancock on the Andrew Marr show a week or so ago who reminisced about how great an institution it was, but I think she said it has now become "tatty". Sadly, I agree.

I think it didn't know what it was any more. It has been coming for a while, but the crunch has pushed it over the edge.
