Does Europe need hedge funds? 1:18pm on 09 Jul 2009 Why shouldn't hedge funds be regulated just like any other financial entity? Banks etc have to be regulated heavily and likewise hedge funds should be too.

The 'myth' that they will move is if regulation is put in place is a 'masquerade'. They need to be near their clients (the big ones - banks, pension fund managers etc). If these clients move they would have to move. I seriously doubt they would move to geneva if hedge funds were regulated more. The Hedge funds need to be close to the movers/shakers of the markets, not in the mountains of Switzerland.

Also, hedge funds increase the volatility in the market (thats how they make money). Its in their interest to have high volatility, and a great many of them participate in activities that increase this (rumour milling etc).

No doubt many of Boris's friends/supporters are in this industry, hence him becoming their poster boy. But lets not get sidetracked. If we as a society want stable long term markets Hedge funds should be regulated just like anyone else.

Its like comparing a ferrari against a lambo. Both are great but aimed at different people.

Personally, I prefer Messi, due to the subtle nuances of his play (just like i preffered Zidane & maradonna). It's only Ronaldo's personality that bugs me, but thats just a matter of opinion. Hopefully it'll be a good game tonight, and no doubt someone unexpected will be the star tonight.

Joe ordinary gets treatment that isn't anywhere as good.

For a group that have resulted in near financial collapse, and no with the politico's reaction of pumping tax money into the system to save it, its us and our kids who will have to pay up in the long term.

I think the bankers, need to accept that they aren't the masters of the universe and their renumeration will have to reflect that in the future.

As the Brazilian President said last night on newsnight, it is an amazing system where people could & can make a lot of money by passing paper from one person to another (whilst still making a loss at the end). All without producing anything of use to society.
What the reshuffle tells us 6:25pm on 19 Jan 2009 Good to see the tories running onto this forum to put in the first comments. However, this is a risk, as Ken Clarke is a popular chap, but is very much the opposite of Cameron.

Ken Clarke sticks to his guns, and will not change his stance for PR purposes unlike Cameron.

He does have gravitas, but also a few follies (i.e. his chairmanship of BAT). This move further undermines Osbourne, as its obvious KC will be used more on economic issues going forward.

I guess KC makes up for Camerons failings in terms of being trustworthy and a 'flip flopper'.
Big Sam is back 12:21pm on 18 Dec 2008 I don't think Newcastle was a wrong turn of Big Sam.

He was unfortunate to turn up at the wrong time, when the clubs ownership was changing.

There are very few cases of Managers staying in place when a new chairman/owner comes in. And Sam was not in line with what the new owners wanted (i.e. a little glamour)

Given time/different ownership he would have been fine.

He is a quality manager and his abilities/techniques have been proven over the course of the years.

So good luck Sam and Blackburn.

Its just business. Also, BO is something of a media creation, and treated as a 'rock star' so of course people are going to be in awe.

He's no Bill Clinton (watch BO at a live press conference, when he is asked q's by the press, for 'examples' of his oratory). But he's got a good team behind him, who will try and help the US out with sound 'democrat' policies.

Day of reckoning 09:31am on 10 Oct 2008 Comparing this to the great depression is a bit far off. Unlike in the 1930's the US now is not the only country internationally with large coffers. The mid east and china are sitting on large reserves which will no doubt be used in the months to come. Especially China which has built up immense reserves, and its in its own interest to ensure that 'one' of its main customers 'the west' doesn't have a deep recession.

The main thing needed now is international co-operation to get this mess sorted out.

The right move for Robinho? 10:26am on 02 Sep 2008 hang on a minute....chelsea sold SWP because Robinho is a similar style of player but better, and they expected to have robbi in their side.

Now he's followed SWP to ManC. Hows that gonna work then? Two fast midget whippets in attack?

Can't see both of them working together in the same team.
Google's Chrome and the browser end game 09:52am on 02 Sep 2008 Nothing like a bit of competition. But its a shame that Google didn't push firefox more. It looks like firefox post 2011, will go the way of netscape, when the purse strings get tighter. But this is the logical move in light of IE with its ~80% of the PC browser market, and with inPrivate coming along with IE8.

However getting ppl to switch from IE is very difficult, it does most things a person wants from a browser relatively well, so for 80% of ppl, i'm sure there is no incentive to go through the hassle of installing another browser. (sorry but its mainly web savvy ppl who actually give a hoot about which browser they use, most ppl just use back, refresh, home, address bar and favorites, and not all the fancy features)

Scolari gives Chelsea Brazilian blend 10:57am on 18 Aug 2008 Good result, however its only the first game and Portsmouth were poor. The real test will be on those soggy nights in dec-mar, when the true grit will be tested.

Good to see anelka giving it a go though, as i think he is due a good season.
