The most divisive and tasteless selection in cricket history 6:36pm on 09 Sep 2008 Why must everyone approach this subject in quite such a melancholic and pessimistic tone, I've had quite enough of everyone harking back to some rose-tinted golden age of sportsmanship.

Jonathon Agnew's comments regarding the announcement of the Stanford team could easily have been predicted, almost to the word, before reading this blog.

Professional cricket will continue to provide an enjoyable spectacle regardless of the money flowing into player's pockets and test cricket will retain its primacy, at least in this country.
Fielding drills pay dividends for England 05:28am on 13 Jul 2008 It is such an unbelievable breath of fresh air for england to have such an effective and dangerous spinning option. Montys performances have attracted a lot of praise but it's almost as if we take the threat he poses for granted when you consider how many barren years we endured without such a high quality spin option, years when, at quite a few grounds, there would be talk every year of dropping the spinner for an extra pace-man.

Who would have thought during these times that with a test series against the number two side in the world stretched in front of us, so many pundits would be suggesting that it would significantly aid england's efforts if the groundsmen could produce turning pitches?

Crazy times.
First day to the hosts 9:13pm on 10 Jul 2008 Have to agree with those who have argued that Vaughan's captaincy skills leave him almost undroppable. To replace him would leave the team significantly weaker in that regard and I think it would take england a long time for england to recover the self-assurance and confidence that his presence engenders.

However, an international team seeking sustained success requires a number 3 who can score centuries on a consistant basis, dig his team out of holes and change the course of the game. Vaughan no longer seems capable of meeting these needs so why not move him down the order, where the demands placed on his role as a batsman would not be quite so great? I understand there is no outstanding candidate to replace him in the order (given KP's preference for the number 4 spot) but it is a position in which we should be looking to develop a player for the long-term.
