Unparliamentary or un-American? 07:18am on 15 Sep 2009 It's the South, Mark. There's no excuse for it just as there is no cure for stupid. The people who are protesting Obama (aside from liberals who think he isn't liberal enough) are a) ignorant and b) racist.

If the South decides that it would like another attempt at nationhood all I can say is good riddance. Don't expect any resistance from the rest of us.

I believe the word you are looking for is "Teutonophile". It's true, to hear it is exceedingly rare in English - though after lving in Germany for the past 4 years I have found that I am becoming a huge fan of Germany (I still don't like football/soccer).

It's ok for you to be proud to be German again, you are 2 generations removed from the sins that were committed during that conflict.

The world is a troubled place, I would like to see a strong Germany out there actively engaged in the world.

You didn't go to my home, the Pacific Northwest, what gives? Ok, I know you had a lot to cover and only so much time to do it in.

Should you travel to the US again might I suggest that you visit Washington and Oregon and see some of the most beautiful scenery within the USA?

We tend to be strongly opiniated too and have our own culture to an extent due to our geographical separation from the rest of the country.

But even if you don't find us newsworthy you can still show up and enjoy a nice salmon dinner.
The candidate as Ordinary Joe 09:51am on 12 Oct 2008 PaulaGinSC - Right on the mark about 2004, I drew the same conclusion after that election.

Recently Sam Harris published an article about this. He noted that Americans demand expertise in their Doctors, Car Mechanics, Attorneys, etc. But that in our politicians we disdain anyone who appears intelligent and elect morons just like the rest of us.

This is sad but true and extremely frustrating for those of us who are not "Joe Six Pack".

It reminds me of a Simpsons episode where Homer (as a child) tells his dad that he wants to be the president when he grows up. Abe responds by saying something to the effect of "son this is the greatest country on earth, we have whole systems in place making sure people like you don't become president". Between Bush and Palin it would appear that this is not the case.
