Do you speak Race? 4:09pm on 23 Oct 2009 The language of race is a minefield only if we tread gingerly it is one of those "grasp the nettle firmly and it becomes a stick to beat you enemies" issues.

If people took ownership of words and made them their own they cease to be an insult.

As SarahJay55 mentions in post 18 "Fashions change in language in all areas - what is acceptable fluctuates, especially if a term is picked up and used in an abusive way. The "P" word is just an abbreviation like "Brit" - except it isn't because it came to be deliberately used as an insult."

I have been called an "Fword Brit" and told "All you Fword Brits are the same" did I treat it as a racial slur? No. no more than I would for being told that all ******* Football Club supporters are thick etc.

We need dialog not offence to enable us to bring an end to racism, sexism ageism and the coming sizeism. If we can't then dark souled people will continue to whisper in corners!

They just shut our '2 miles away' depot and replaced it with the Post Office Counter open 9 -5 only and after 2 weeks it's sent to Ireland to be returned to sender....
2 weeks .. that's how long our holiday was ... Stupid!

I would hope that the service could be restored and protected in the National Interest .... Like the dockyards and energy supplies ...silly me!

Isn't it a pity that the political parties have already destroyed the concept with the language used in the past. The chance of it being allowed to succeed by the press and public is now so slim...
Just one letter to the papers "my friend in .... gets.... I was told I can't have it's like some unfair post code lottery!" and localism is dead.

Then in a little under 3 years Gordie and da Boyz put us back even deeper in the hole than at any time ever.

The thought of them doing a "if we can't have it lets smash it and spoil it for the rest job" like a teenage gang banned from the park, really scares me.
The G20 protests. Does the media only cover violence? 11:02pm on 01 Apr 2009 The problem with all protests is the silly over emphasis they receive in the media. The louder and more violent the more attention they get.
Think back to the Live Animal Export mass demos where 6000 people attracted huge media attention for threatening lorry drivers. This was talked about as a huge popular movement. More people than that go to watch Gillingham Football Club on a good day

The reality is just one person in every 10,000 cared enough to go and protest. It would help keep a sense of proportion if the numbers demonstrating were put into this type of context.
Fred Goodwin to receive £650,000 for life 10:40pm on 25 Feb 2009 Perhaps we as tax payers could sue for compensation for the losses we are suffering as a result of what might be considered hisnegligence & failure to exercise due care with the nations money and reputation.

His pension funds .. he has more than one I'd wager .. plus his houses and cars might not be much towards the huge losses but it will send a huge message to his successors.

Wrong, the figures for total Road Deaths is less than 3000 from all causes.

Yet another example of the Government making a problem look like a national disaster so they can seek to control the Subjects lives even more.

Drugs, alcohol, motoring, flying, sex there are real statistics and the Goverment scare figures.

We get reports of 76% oppose the Euro ... but what was the question ... Do you rule out ever joining the Euro? Yes or No?" or was it "Should the UK join the Euro tomorrow? Yes or No?" or was it someting less precise " Britain should join the Euro now. Do you a;support this statement strongly? b; support this statement, c; Do not support it, d; disagree with it? e; disagree strongly with it? f; Don't know?"
Well we know from reporting that 230/1000 said yes to "a" and 60/1000 said yes to "f" but the rest ..... how where they divided?

In the interests of good unbiased survey reportage it should be BBC policy to state the question people where asked and the answers available.

A survey commissioned .. reveals that 95% of men have not stopped beating their wives ... true but 94% had never beaten their wives in the first place so could not stop...
"Corrosive of public trust in official statistics" 5:59pm on 12 Dec 2008 Typical of this Government ... announce something , build it up and then change the rules entirely. Destroying public confidence in every thing associated with it just to meet some short term end.
