I'll hold my hands up and admit I have been a critic of Lampards England performances in the past (although I wouldn'tsay made him a scapegoat), but this was based on how he was playing for England at the time, which many would agree he has been poor, I'd say since Euro 2004.

I am, however, a believer in players earning their right to stay in the team, and for me Lampard has done that. It would be unfair of anyone to call for him to be dropped wen playing poorly, but then not call for his selection when he has played well.....which is why in a straight choice at the moment I'd choose Lampard. Although if his form drops again, drop him and bring in someone else (Gerrard), the same goes for any England player.

As for the rest of the team, well the defence pretty much picks itself, I think Capello will stick with Heskey and Rooney up front, but it's that left side that's causing concern again. As many people have been saying, it's a shame Ashley Young hasn't been selected, I think he deserves a chance.
Capello will keep England grounded 12:38pm on 08 Oct 2008 Firstly - those goals that flew past Oliver Kahn, were not in the slightest bit monotonous! I'm sure you weren't sat in the stadium yawning as England thrashed Germany Phil. I really don't understand that comment at all.

Secondly - why must Gerrard be re-instated? England have persevered with Gerrad and Lampard in the same team for years, with no success and a plethora of poor performances. I don't think it's a coincidence that their best performance in years came when Gerrard didn't play. I don't doubt that Gerrard is a class player, but it has been proven many times he can't play in the same team as Lampard, and after Lampard's performance against Croatia he deserves to keep his place.

We follow our football clubs because we love the game and are passionate about their results on the pitch. Maybe you could bear this in mind and in future write articles about football, afterall you are a sports editor, not a legal/ financial editor.

It's refreshing to read an article by someone who has such a depth of knowledge about his subject, and who writes about a variety of different topics, rather than just sticking to a comfort zone of Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, like a certain Chief Football Writer.

Ashley leaves Newcastle in chaos 10:46am on 04 Sep 2008 This issue isn't about freedom of press, it's about journalists taking responsibility for creating panic, confusion and mayhem at a football club, when it was completely unneccessary. I'm not just blaming Phil McNulty, nor am I just pointing the finger at the sports media. To be a journalist is a job of huge responsibility, and sometimes I think it's on think that responsibility is in the hands of the wrong people.

I think people may be having a go at Mr McNulty because, instead of apologising for reporting an ill-informed story, he has blamed his "sources".

Everyone wants a free press, but it would also be nice for the press to take some responsibilty for their actions from time to time.
KP's Golden Wonders 11:48am on 03 Sep 2008 I can't believe people are berating Capello over his selection for the Andorra and Croatia games when they haven't even been played yet! Give the man a chance, at least wait until the two games have been played before judging him.

I understand Chelsea fans sticking up for a player who has been excellent for them in the past few seasons, but I have to agree with Robbo on this one. If Lampard wants 5 years then why not sign for 4 years and then earn the 5th year? It's because he wants an extra year of a guaranteed bumper pay cheque.

I would respect him alot more if he was just honest and said he wants to leave because he loves working with Mourinho, wants a new challenge, or whatever other reason he wants to leave for. Instead he tries to turn it on the club and blame it on them for him wanting out, that shows a lack of balls.
Blattered Codwallop 12:57pm on 11 Jul 2008 Spot on Robbo. On my current wage I won't earn as much in the rest of my working life as Frank Lampard will from 1 month of the contract he has been offered, and he talks about wanting to secure his future!!

These superstars are completely out of touch with where they came from and that behaviour like this is an insult to the average working person who forks out to go and watch them.
