Shots from behind the bar 3:32pm on 20 Nov 2009 Sorry, as a serious-but-strictly-amateur who does events and clubs a bit "for fun" and the entertainment of the subjects I have to agree with many of the sentiments above. What a load of valueless lost opportunities. I'm trying hard to be polite. They record nothing of importance, they have little technical merit and (to me) the worst thing is that they don't bring out the subjects true character at all.
A balanced approach to climate change 4:24pm on 18 Nov 2009 It's very easy to see why there are so many so-called "skeptics". The mainstream media, and the BBC in particular, would prefer to use the word "heretic" but tyou would be hard pressed to get away with quite such a strong label.

There are too many vested interests in the field of climate change. Didn't it use to be called "global warming" - until the greedy marketing folk discovered that the more generic label of "change" would be even less provable. There is a vast amount of money, mostly public money, to be diverted in this field in everything from spurious research grants to carbon trading to replacement products to consumers.

The problem is that there is an entire parade of people shouting "the Emporer is wearing nothing!" but the media is ignoring those views that don't fit with their agenda. BBC guilty even more than most.
Census question questions 1:52pm on 28 Oct 2009 When the 2001 census came around I filled in those parts of the form I believed to be non-intrusive and I also proceeded to ask awkward questions about Data Protection and how the data would be handled and what use it would be put to and why was the scope of the personal data so wide. I never got answers so the form was never returned. It sat on the side for about 2 years in case someone wanted to give me some answers, but nothing ever happened.

While there are pompous posturings by senior (un)civil servants and politicians about how necessary it all is, the truth seems to be that we get no guarentees in law and that no individuals at any level are responsible for the handling of this wide ranging and very personal data - so I feel quite guilt-free in refusing to supply it.

High Court rulings on the BBC and FOI 4:43pm on 15 Oct 2009 So, let me get this ruling straight... If the BBC (management) decide that something would be too embarassing to them to provide under an FOI request all they have to do is declare that that information / document etc. *may* be used for journalistic purposes - without any bona fide intention to do so - and voila! no need to provide it.

The politics of 'proper behaviour' 4:56pm on 29 Sep 2009 You can't legislate respect. ASBOs are intended to be a way for our self-styled betters to "dare" the peasants to cross a line and pretend it's about raising standards. It's all about confrontation and division. Never in recent history has a government used subtle and not so subtle methods to divide the population so that we hate and disrespect each other - in the hope that we don't notice how corrupt, greedy and criminal the ruling party is.

The recent expenses leaks and resulting scandal is only the tip of a very massive iceberg. We used to think the Tories were corrupt (think Tebbit going to work for BT after privatisation) but they were rank amateurs.
Comparing the energy efficiency of public buildings 12:05pm on 25 Aug 2009 Another complete waste of money brought on by an authoritarian government whose sole purpose appears to be to distract the electorate from being concerned about real issues that affect them. Instead we spend money on surveying buildings and creating apple-to-oranges spreadsheets for something that should be managed by the locals in charge of those buildings and other facilities.

Statistical gender bending 4:48pm on 10 Aug 2009 Did you know that 40% of all sickness absence occurs on Mondays and Fridays ? Surely employers should be coming down much harder on this gross abuse of people taking long weekends!

(There is a rather large dose of sarcasm in there in case anyone thinks I am being serious...)
FOI and the BBC: The next round 09:29am on 26 Jun 2009 If we, as the people who pay the TV tax, cannot influence how it is spent through the normal medium of open competition then we most certainly should have the right to see how the money is spent simple to try to influence the spending through an expectation of causing embarassement.

Just like national security should not be a fungible excuse with embarassment for Ministers and Civil Servants, neither should somewhat fake concerns over privacy. When it comes to the "stars" at the BBC the agents of these so called "talents" are the first to leak their hyper-inflated earnings to the media to make them seem important.

Transparency reduces corruption. Simples, ya ?
