Ashes player ratings - First Test 10:53pm on 12 Jul 2009 Poor bowling performance but not from the spinners. When are an English team really going to give their spinners a chance to do what spinners need to do. Don't chop and change them, give then long periods to build up pressure. Monty was especially poorly utilised I thought. The 3rd day, before lunch, Monty takes Ponting, and Broad not Swann is brought on at the other end when we needed men around the bat. This has been the malaise of England cricket ever since I started watching the game. I can't even remember a more spin friendly wicket in England or Wales.

First Barca possible penalty not given (A good shout I thought)
Second Two (I think, though many argue three) Chelsea possible penalties
Third Then a non-red red card given.

Bias: None... no conspiracy sorry. I just don't think the ref wanted to
make the tough decisions and where were the linesmen when he needed them.

If Barca had got that first decision I think the rest would have been mute. The game changes.

Having said that, good game. Lampard, Essien, Xabi and Iniesta all were terrific. Messi and Etoo were missing. BArca missed Henry terribly. Maloud was was inventive and Drogba was tough but couldn't finish.
Chelsea however let Barca have the ball for long periods which is no way to play against them and in the end they paid the price. The reactions at the end (Ballacks was worse than Drogbas) were more the Hallmark of lower league team losing a FA cup tie in the last second than CL semifinalists.
Moyes & O'Neill lead by example 10:47am on 14 Feb 2009 If either of these managers get a chance at Chelsea, MU, 'pool or Arsenal they would need time to build. I hate to say say it but they would not get it and be sacked within 18 months. Though MU fans may crow about how we gave SAF time to achieve... I remember those calls for him to be sacked... The palace replay saved him... the cwc saved him... though I would hope we would, I doubt we would give a new manager the time. Here's to hoping we don't follow Real Madrid's revolvong door policy but I don't trust the board when the time comes and I know how fickle our fans are
Wenger satisfied as critics silenced 1:04pm on 09 Nov 2008 Good game yesterday

Arsenal grafted hard. Continually put pressure on united. I think Clichy was man of the match. Still united were better in build up but did not put anything away. As has been said before Rooney and Ronaldo were wateful and Berbatov actually got little service.

From early on it was obvious that this was a game that Tevez would have thrived in. Jostling under pressure. I don't think I have ever seen anyone better at snatching back a seemingly lost ball at close quarters. It was very disappointing that SAF only brought him on near the end and brought Giggs on before him!

Park, Carrick and Fabregas were wasteful in the midfield but Nasri was stunning.

As a united fan the defense worried me. Neville left gaping holes which left the normally secure Ferdinand and Vidic stretched. On top of that neither had a good game. Rafael came on and was inspirational again but he is not the finished article, and for that matter neither is Anderson. However, Anderson did run his socks off and covered well for Carricks errors and laziness (not something I would normally say about him).

In all the big players, Cesc, CR, Rooney, Berbatov, did not perform but there where excellent performances from Nasri, Clichy, Rafael and yes, Anderson (who at least showed heart)

An end to "victimhood"? 8:56pm on 06 Nov 2008 It is true that it's not about black people, it has not really been for many years, it is about poor people.

The sooner that people accept that children raised in poorer neighbourhoods have less opportunity. It is ALL about education.

I am lucky: privileged, white, male, educated with supportive parents.

I feel no guilt for my upbringing but having chosen to work as a teacher in some of the roughest schools in the UK, I know that opportunity is not the same for each child.

I have no doubt I would have drowned in such a school environment as the ones where I have worked for nothing else, but being dyslexic. I did not really begin to achieve in education until I was 11. Without the love and support of my family where would I be now?

At work I had students who stayed back with me after school because they did not feel safe doing homework at home where anti-intellectualism, or if you prefer anti-educationalism, ran high.

If part of a governments remit is to protect and even help the weakest in society then form of acceptance that we are not all given the same start in life should also enter it. It should not be based on colour, race, religion, etc. but on opportunity. Organisations should be encoraged to take this into account.
Soft imperalism 00:08am on 04 Nov 2008 "Can we play nice, please boys and girls" as I am sure one of my primary teachers once said.

1. Justin throws up (sometime literally it seems) stuff for us to use to start discourse. It mostly seems to be heavily ladened with sarcasm and (often awful) humour. It does well enough and has introduced me to particularly mindboggling links that I would never have found. It does not mean it purports to buy any of it.

2. It is interesting to see that some of our more red bloggers have come around at last to acceptance. You blues can start being nice to them again and give then a virtual coffee.

3. However we still have some rather odd conspiracies coming through rather like over the Hamilton 5th place in the Brazillian Grand Prix (Motor sport). A young black driver who, yes at points, has been a tad arrogant but in no-way deserves the vitriol sent his way on a sporting blog. He won the Formula 1 Drivers championship as the youngest ever champion. Sorry to go off the point but like with Hamilton I can't help feeling there is still a horrible underbelly of racism that hasn't quite been swept away across the west.

Good luck with your votes tomorrow my American Friends. I hope the democrats win but that is me. Don't worry yourselves about Obama... he's right of me and my anarchist and communist friends think I am somewhere right of Ghengis Khan.

Obama in enemy territory 1:39pm on 02 Nov 2008 We already know that on this blog there are some posters who do not know what socialism means.

"Dangerous Socialist" has become the new term of abuse that was "Dangerous Liberal" in the last election.

From an outside prospective mainstream US politics just has Conservatives (democrats) and More Conservative (Republicans).

The term I really cannot fathom is "Liberal Elite" as a term of abuse.

If we dissect it:

"Liberal" in the terms we understand from these people who use it are those who think that government should expand to help the least well off. Shirkers and lay abouts who are not adding to the american dream. Worse still they might be a little different: Black, Hispanic, Muslim, Catholic, Jewish, Asian, communist, etc

"Elite" implies power, de facto money and (certainly from the comments) education. The powerful, educated and rich people in this "liberal elite" spend all there time trying to destroy the US by thinking about the weakest. How very unamerican. That sounds a little too selfless to me.

Might it not be that these people see the US growing as a strong country by taking all the country with it.

If all parts of the country have basic human rights which include education, Healthcare, Shelter, Food, Liberty and the right to Justice, your country actually might become the SHINNING BEACON it should be.

I want Obama to win because I want a strong just US who could help make our world a better place and more importantly... take the rest of the world with it.
Obama in enemy territory 4:59pm on 01 Nov 2008 Over the last few days it has been fascinating reading ex-serviceman's slow decent into madness. It's like watching Betty Blue (37°2 le matin).

I feel for the guy...
Bad losers and bad finishers 9:15pm on 30 Oct 2008 We really are getting to silly season so can I please clarify some points:
1. McCain is not GWB
2. Obama is about as socialist as any member of the British conservative party... he's social democrat (as are all but the most extreme of the republicans)... and so is McCain.
3. What some Vets say about McCain is irrelevent. The man was flying for his country.. was tortured and broke. Would you or I do any better?
4. The citizenship question is laughable
5. Neither man would make a terrible president
6. Obama is not a saint
7. McCain is not a racist
8. Anyone who is active at all and looks outside their immediate circle is going to have rubbed shoulders with some dodgy people. I have, as have McCain and Obama
9. fear mongering about possible ramifications of the election is repulsive
10. MSM might actually believe Obama would make a better POTUS rather than it being a liberal conspiracy. The right wing press in the UK is all but supporting Obama.
11. Sarah Palin is not the evil spawn of Satin (sic)

On a personal note... I would vote for Obama because:
a. I think he inspires which is what America and the world needs at the moment
b. He will reflect well on the US to the rest of the world
c. He may not be that experience but he gathers intelligent thinkers around him
d. He is closer to me politically. Yes he is right wing but of a friendly Tory Wet type. Not by much though

On the down side...
If he is elected there may be too many people whose hopes cannot be realised and he could easily crash and burn.
