What will Nasa do next? 1:58pm on 20 Aug 2009 Despite the threats of global warming, nucleur annihilation, over-population and food/water scarcity, limited energy resources, being hit by a comet or asteroid, I think the human race has a few more billion years to decide whether to go elsewhere in the galaxy :-)

These other factors may push us in the right direction along the way.

Hypothetically - if a limitless energy supply was found on the dark side of the moon, or in Mount Olympus on Mars, and could be beamed to us via some technical process yet to be invented, I don't think it would take much convincing to kick start a programme.
We can conjure money out of thin air based on future returns these days you know.

The milk seller diluted the milk, but sold it for less.

The people were no better off.In fact, they wanted greater amounts to compensate.

Why not blame it on the selfish genes?

A more considered view would take a step back, and try analyse the system as a set of agents with tendencies to act in certain ways.

alternatively, how about this:

men + money + fast car + big house = choose a good mate(s) & lots of children & genes well looked after

women + rich man = nice things & lots of children & genes well looked after
Goldman: Recession? What recession? 4:45pm on 14 Jul 2009 Golly, good old Goldman's grabbed the gold.
It won't last.
Any profits bagged will lose value unles they are made to work, and they can't be made to work unless money is being churned through the system and re-distributed; and THAT will only continue to happen as long as there continue to be ups and downs, and small differentials in price worth exploiting.
Personally, I think that everything will dip uniformly, and the only way out of the dip will be via good old graft and hard work inventing and making stuff - something these Goldman types will know nothing about.

Imagine the impact of either BOE or the Treasury said that things were going to get a lot worse...

I think economists should be exploring analogies with ecosystem breakdown and replacement, rather than playing with dubious mathematical models and simulations.

What happens when a diverse ecosystem suddenly starts to break-down because of a sudden shift in local conditions? If we can work out likely scenarios, then we can encourage those that lead to the least pain by setting parameters. It may be that some parameters are no longer relevant. No point in filling a pond with water if it has developed a leak. No point in diverting a river if the river is dry.
Interest Rates and Money Supply are too crude and unfocussed. The big corporates will gain, but SMEs will only get indirect benefit?
How big business copes with recession 11:55am on 13 May 2009 What happens when a lush pastoral economic landscape becomes more scrub-like? The larger indigineous inhabitants die out, and the lowest forms of flora and fauna struggle on. Only the grazers and migratory animals, who are passing through, can temporarily survive in such an arid landscape and fill the gaps left by those that die out.

Large corporates can draw on resources from outside the local ecomomic conditions. Small businesses cannot. For them to survive, either they become dependant on the large corporates, or the equivalent of reservoirs and irrigation channels (i.e. banks willing to lend, better overdraft facilities) need to be built to re-vitalise the eco-system.

Are we going to end up with an arid economic landscape dominated by global 'big business' who can move out when conditions get tough?

Having said that, he didn't deserve to be fired. But I wonder if the Beeb realised too late that he might have some interesting 'family' connections?

I feel that Alistair Darling needs a similar mealy-mouthed form of words to explain this one.

But this does not affect a bank's lending policy or risk assessments, so the banks still won't lend. the money will stay on their books.

Give the money directly to people with mortgages and businesses, who will then spend the money...
Lloyds and HBOS humbled 4:15pm on 13 Feb 2009 What do we do with radioactive waste? We put it in a large concrete bunker underground - it's good for nothing.

What do we do with a cancer? We try and remove it or reduce it. What if it is malignant, and spreads to all parts of the body...?

Question - is all this toxic debt something we can bury / write off , or is it like a cancer that will overwhelm the whole financial system.
A bank insurer, not a toxic bank 7:27pm on 17 Jan 2009 Here's an idea - offer anyone who cannot pay back a loan a government backed job - either building the third runway, the olympic stadium, keeping parks tify, cleaning drains - whatever.
Then take a percentage of the money they earn direct from their employer ;-) to pay back the loan.
It will look good on the books if nothing else.
