What makes a tech story? 5:28pm on 01 Sep 2009 I would be interested in more investigations regarding internet connections and how they are provided.

It seems that internet service providers are all the time adding more hidden and un hidden restrictions to what you can use your connection for.

For example BT on its normal package will not let you watch streaming video above 800kbits/sec at 'peak' times even if this is within the speed of connection that you have payed for.

With most of us using the internet these days it would be interesting to know where we stand when we encounter this sort of thing.

100megabit is only about 8-9 megabytes per second anyway. If your on a newish local area network you can get 80-90 megabytes per second and this is about as fast as a consumer hard drive. If you are using these speeds in the office to go down by a factor of a thousand is far too slow.

It is frustrating that when choosing an internet connection the usage allowance for an "unlimited" connection is not made clear!
BPI v ISPs - who's won on music piracy? 12:37pm on 24 Jul 2008 ISP's like this idea as they just send out the letters to their heavy users thus trying to scare them into using their "unlimited" connection less.

ISP's do not like file sharing only because it uses their over sold bandwidth costing the ISP.

If everyone would just stick to a bit of web and email then they will be happy to provide 100MB connections that nobody can actually utilise.

Broadband ads - Virgin rapped 12:33pm on 04 Jul 2008 Virgin do not provide fiber to the home as is stated above.

What they provide is coax to the home and call it fiber as there backbone is fiber.

Is fiber spelt fiber or fibre?
