Get out and about. There are plenty of good news stories out there but, until good news pays your salary I'll dream on.

It was 'on the money' and, who knows, the Baroness might be right too, but you only know (when the tide has turned) in retrospect. In today's overspun political climate, it was a telling error of judgement coinciding as it did with announcements of wholesale redundancies. Cameron's problem will be, if she is right, that people might soon forget who really got us into this whole damn mess and re-elect them.
Irresponsible or prudent? 12:47pm on 17 Nov 2008 Osborne was unwise to knock sterling because if it doesn't fall signiifcantly further he will rue the day. If it does, he will be accused of hastening its fall. However, he is perfectly entitled to link the govt's profligacy with the forex mkt view of sterling's overall value.

Another point Osborne might have made is: why did GB recently pay off the undated $5bln 2% US loan to the UK arranged at Bretton Woods? A descision surely in the same class as flogging off our gold at rock bottom.

British banks bailed out 6:54pm on 03 Oct 2008 Bagehot's maxim to provide ample liquidity but at a premium price would have served the current situation perfectly adequately. But no. The Bank knows best. Oh dear.
British banks bailed out 6:51pm on 03 Oct 2008 If the Bank hadn't wrecked the commercial bill market ten years ago (which had served the daily provision of liquidity to the banking system for a century) - and the highly effective dicscount market with it, none of this nonsense would be happening now.

Funny thing, politics... 6:43pm on 30 Jul 2008 I wonder why we haven't heard from those nice MPs who jumped ship from the Tories when times were bad and who must now be contemplating Job Seekers Allowance for gross disloyalty to their constituents? Giant among this group is Quentin Davies MP who, with spectacular timing, jumped during GB's finest hour. Indeed, he only had about an hour to do it! He deserves the Cherie Blair award for unbelievably bad judgement.
I can't wait for a Reg Prentice-style defection to the Tories - but by whom?
