I actually think that Liverpool would be. We have very good players in our starting line-up and reserves but sometimes the formation is not quite right or the players do not get enough chance to show what they can do. It is very clear that there is a big difference in training at Liverpool currently between who the first team, the fringe and the reserves. This was very clearly illustrated in one of our early season games when we had a reserve team lad standing in for Carragher. He had a great match but every time that he had the ball and any regular team player would know to bring it forward and distribute he just paused to see what the senior players would tell him to do!! It was actually quite funny to see how scared he was. I don't think that he would have felt like this if SAF was in charge as he is very good at imbuing confidence in his young players.

There are certain players as well at Liverpool that are on the fringe that perhaps SAF would have got more out of-Dossena and Voronin were both first team picks for their countries and I am sure he would have got more out of them than Benitez has, similarly with Babel, who should have been let go a long time ago.

At UTD SAF has been there so long that I think the next manager and if it was Benitez for a season would have a very difficult time. I don't think Giggs, Scholes and Neville would stay but I do think that Benitez would have a very clear discussion with Berba about what he needs to do better. Torres was not the player he is now at Athletico and Rafa has to take some of the credit for that. I don't know why Berbatov has not been told where his weaknesses are and what he needs to do better. If he hadn't cost so much money I think that Owen would be starting more games with Rooney, as was the plan in the CL game before he was injured and Rooney would have benefited from the space. Apart from that the rest of the players at utd are generally very good, apart from Nani, but I think he would have to get rid of the utility players like O'Shea to get some specialists in. Utd would do better in CL, scoring more goals under Benitez but I don't think that he would have his first league title.

I don't think that SAF would get the title with SAF in charge either but I have to say that neither of them would win much as SAF is coming to the end of his career and RAFA still has years to go. I think if utd get the title this season and break our record then he will finally retire and it will be very very interesting to see what happens next.

In fact this would be a very good game to play with A.N OTher manager in Europe and SAF as he has to retire some day.

SAF can use this game to leverage the board for another midfielder or two that he really needs, he won't want to see another CL final vs Barcelona esque performance like this again this season.

My biggest congratulations of the day goes to the Spirit of Shankly idiots. A reported 10 000 fans were supposed to be involved in the protest march and less than 1000 actually were. You are irrelevant. Get behind the team or go away. You could get more people to turn up for a Coleen book signing than in Liverpool than that.

We loved him and would have loved to have him back. He might now wear the red of Manchester but everyone, even the OT faithful know that he is a Scouser at heart. King-making by the departed leader hardly ever happens these days. If everyone so disliked Mosley why did they vote for his choice to succeed him? Think we will have more of the same messy rule changes next season when what we really need is 5 years of stability and minimal interference so that the fans and the teams can properly develop a car and not having to wing it all the time. Jenson won the title this season because of the rear diffuser innovation. No other reason. Lets hope Brawn or Mclaren can pull another fast one on Ferrari next season and lets make it 3 in a row British driver victories.

Anyone else have a sneaky feeling that now that Todt is in the main beneficiary is going to be Renault...lets just wait and see if their suspended ban becomes a fine...

lol. Any list that includes Nani he will always be bottom of. Kuyt scored more goals than Tevez last season and has done very well with us and for us. Certainly much more success for us than any of the other players in that list. What has Fletcher even done for utd? Injured for half of last season-his breakthrough-and his international team have not qualified for another tournament-and Kuyt is part of a more successful than England Dutch side where he is in the starting line up in most games.

Lets not talk about Park either as most utd fans that I talk to don't even know what he brings to the team-its certainly not regular goals so it must be far east marketing and shirt money. I would probably put Lucas just above Nani but the age gap is big, and Valencia can't hold down a regular place in the MU starting line-up either at the moment so he can't get too high in the list either.

What a load of rubbish. Kenny has been out of management for a long time and took us as far as we could go last time. Also Rafa just signed a 5 year contract!!!! Can you imagine the compo package if he was to be fired now? Conservatively he will be on £3million a year and over 5 years that is £15million. That is just a conservative estimate. He could be on much more than that say somewhere around a £20million package and that would be a new Torres. We don't need to go back to the managers of the past if there is a change that happened at Newcastle and look what a disaster that was.

If anyone were to be offered the job there is one potential candidate that I would have as one of the front runners and that is the vastly under rated Roy Hodgson from Fulham. Read his cv on Wiki if you have any worries:

Benitez faces biggest test 1:09pm on 21 Oct 2009 Ah. Stop picking on Voronin. He was only on the pitch for a blink of an eye. He should have come on much earlier to give some support to Ngog. He is a striker who had a very good season in Germany last season and seeing as he has stayed he should have been given more chances. Peter Crouch probably had more appearances for 90 mins than he has had so calling him a journeyman is unfair. The one game ( I think it was Stoke) he got a decent run out in this season he looked good. However he should have come on for Lucas last night not Benny.

However if only we had one of Crouch or Keane or Benitez had brought in cover over the summer for the position that all the fans wanted to see him buy for:up front. The over reliance on 4-2-3-1 is becoming embarassing and this is why Lucas doesn't have the greatest games-he is not a dm but an attacking midfielder but he is stuck in a rigid formation that doesn't work without Alonso.

Also it is funny how no one has much mentioned that for the second CL match in a row Insua's lack of pace and being out of his depth was shown up last night. Aurelio should have come on for him and Insua is quickly playing himself out of the team.

I think we will do the business at the weekend as the one thing about our team is that you never write us off. My team:

These might be the only players we have left that are fit but we have to attack rather than sit back as we will get swamped. I think if we had come out and tried to play like we did in the first half last night in the second half and brought someone on to support Ngog we would have got the second goal we needed. It was a great effot by a patched up team even though we lost.

Dossena did the business against Utd last season on the left so lets see him do it again. :):)

Utd don't want him. He doesn't want to go to Spurs (and they have Lennon). Man City probably think that he doesn't fit in their style of play (and they have SWP) and it is doubtful he would do a Tevez as well. He isn't under 25 so Gunners don't want him and probably wouldn't want to pay his wages.

I would be happy for him to come to Liverpool to help populate our much alluded to spartan bench but we aren't in the top 5 at the moment so that is us ruled out too. :):)

I made this point last season when Pennant was still at liverpool that if I were manager at Spurs, City or Liverpool I would have got Beckham on loan just for his expertise working with SWP, Lennon and Pennant. (His wages will mostly pay for themselves in increased ground attendances and shirt sales). All 3 of these players need to improve not only their final ball but also how early they get it in. I don't think Beckham will stay in football when he eventually retires so this could be the last chance for any of these players to learn the skill that he has. Not going to happen but it worked with Mcallister and Gerrard so don't see why it couldn't with Beckham and any of these 3.
Capello's World Cup contenders 10:53am on 15 Oct 2009 Only one difference in the team that Phil picked for me and that is also related to the MOTM award that I think rightly was given to Beckham. Aaron Lennon did absolutely nothing last night. SWP however played his heart out in an unfamiliar position and even got a goal. Beckham got MOTM as everyone watching on telly and in the ground could see the difference in quality when he came on. In fact I almost think that any player who had come on after Lennon would have got the MOTM. Apart from one run in the whole 60mins he had he did nothing-no link up play with Johnson, didn't get round the defenders, didn't come narrow to help Lampard and Barry when they couldn't get it through to the front men. Beckham comes on and we have about 5 chances mostly created by one touch then whack in a brilliant early cross that had the Belarus defence praying for the end. WHY OH WHY CAN'T ANY OF OUR RIGHT SIDED PLAYERS DO THIS APART FROM HIM!!! One touch, early cross simple. You could see that when Beckham did come on that Crouch and Gabby were so surprised that the ball came across when they actually wanted it played for the first time in the game they were a bit out of position!! Crazy.

If this match was anything to go by then Beckham and SWP are in and Lennon is out. i have a feeling that Walcott is not going to manage to stay fit long enough to get in the side and well I think he is too lightweight against big physical defenders with pace-think Italians, Argentina, Germany, Brazil.
England cannot replace Rooney 12:28pm on 14 Oct 2009 I am not anti-Man Utd (much) but Rooney isn't totally crucial to England. He is a very good player to have in the starting line-up true but this myth that he strikes fear into defenders is just not held up. If he was that fantastic his goal scoring record for England would be better and he would have had a hat-trick against Barcelona in last season's CL final against their reserve and patched up injured veteran defence. :):)

Rooney actually is a problem for England as putting him in the team means that because he prefers not to be the front/target man but running off one you can only play one way. If Crouch and Defoe, Crouch and Bent, Heskey and Bent/Defoe or Cole and Bent/Defoe play together up front then Lampard and Gerrard can get up behind them a lot more and play up the pitch.

However I would rather Stevie G wasn't playing for England on the left hand side at all. I just hope that that Downing can get fit so that he doesn't have to play there any longer. I also think that Stevie G could do a better job than any of the current 3 choices on the right hand side but would always go with Beckham if we have the target men up front (If Phil's argument holds up then I would always start with Stevie G on the right if Rooney +1 is up front). This world cup could see Stevie G catching splinters for the group games as the team is definitely unbalanced at the moment. Also if I was Capello it would be a no decision to bench Ferdinand. He is the one who really looks like he couldn't care less to be playing for his country and as the rest of the squad is picked on form surely his place is in jeopardy too.

You can't and shouldn't be allowed to try and play yourself into form in an international game when you aren't fully fit and/or have lost your confidence. We have seen this tried with Jonny Wilkinson and others in rugby and most of the top order of England cricket team (Shah, Bopara etc) and it just doesn't work. We need to play all our games between now and the world cup like we are already there to set the tone for the tournament. In fact I think it is more detrimental to try and play yourself into form. Imagine if Ferdinand has another bad game tonight??? It could ruin the rest of his season for Man Utd but this could be good for us with the match coming up!
