Woods's only option was to step away 10:36pm on 12 Dec 2009 Marc (#137), I've never particularly liked Woods - I regret to say that part of me is now quite glad I have a reason for that dislike.
Woods's only option was to step away 10:16pm on 12 Dec 2009 I wonder if the behind-the-scenes problems in Woods' private life go some way to explaining his increasingly objectionable on-course behaviour.

If taking time out from the game brings an end to the foul-mouthed, petulant, club thumping antics then I for one welcome his absence from the game for a short period. From a viewing perspective I found the big tournaments far more enjoyable when he was out injured.

Let's face it, when Tiger plays well nobody comes close, and despite all the talk of lost sponsors I genuinely do not agree that one man's all consuming dominance can possibly be good for the game.

I hope he and his family can resolve their problems - but in the meantime I am going to enjoy the golf. Sorry, Tiger fans, but I am quite sure I am not alone.

To save yourself from public ridicule, if you are going to be critical over someone's use of APOSTROPHES at least do that person the courtesy of spelling it right. As more than one other contributor has suggested, your remark is an embarrassment to you.

As for the game, I saw very little unfortunately (helping my kids put the Christmas tree up!), but I saw enough, particularly towards the end when Chelsea were not getting things all their own way, to conclude that despite the club being under new management they are still likely to have issues with discipline if things go against them.

Love or hate Ashley Cole he is a quality full back who Chelsea cannot do without. If his petulant behaviour continues to get the better of him then they may end up having to do just that for short periods. The same goes for Drogba and any number of their foreign imports. Some of their antics are shameful.

Despite not quite being a neutral I have to say this season is shaping up to be a cracker. I agree, Phil, that the main protagonists are likely to lose more games in the months ahead, and whilst I suspect it may still boil down to a straight fight between United and Chelsea, there are twists and turns to come.
Have you booked an easyJet flight that may never take off? 9:44pm on 24 Sep 2009 A group of us are due to fly from EMA in January for a golfing holdiay - we have hotels, courses etc. booked, and now do not know where we are. And to top it all, our flight (which easyjet can now no longer guarantee) is still being "sold" as available on their website, regardless of their warning pop-up. What sort of way is this to do business?

I have flown with easyjet many times in the past, but if the company pull the plug on their EMA operations without making adequate provision for customers who have already booked, then my business will go elsewhere in future.

We are now faced with a ludicrous situation - we either wait and see, and then if easyjet cancel our flights it will be too late, by early December, to find an alternative. Or we spend now on an alternative carrier, and run the risk of losing money in the event easyjet say they will carry us.

Transfer deadline day Q&A 6:45pm on 02 Sep 2009 I agree that MUFC are lacking a spark in midfield. After the CL final it was quite clear that to compete at the very highest level in Europe, Ferguson needed to strengthen his squad, especially in midfield. Selling Ronaldo and buying Owen and Valencia does not, to me, equate to strengthening.

Whilst (with the very obvious exception of Stam) Ferguson has generally been proved to be right when star players have moved elsewhere, we are now in the position where we have the ageing Scholes and Giggs, both of whom will have less impact as time goes on, alongside the likes of Carrick, Anderson, Park, and Fletcher. That to me looks like a rather pedestrian midfield. Where is the genius needed to unlock a top class defence?

I do not object to the sale of Ronaldo, because the time was right for him to go, but I was convinced all summer that Ferguson had a replacement lined up. To see no big arrival is a huge disappointment, and I am deeply worried that, if we lose Rooney and/or (the yet to convince me) Berbatov for any length of time, we may struggle to finish in the top four.
How England can win the Ashes 4:31pm on 10 Aug 2009 I really can't believe the flack Harmison is coming in for. Notwithstanding the fact that he may just have been asked to try and bounce Aurstralia out at Headingley, a good number of people seem to be disregarding the fact that, to win back The Ashes, England have to bowl Australia out twice at The Oval.

To do that we need an attack capable of getting 20 wickets and, love him or loathe him, the fact remains that no batsman in the world likes facing genuine pace and Harmison is no trundler. And he put the skids under Australia when playing for The Lions only weeks ago.

I would go with the same attack at The Oval, only changing it if Flintoff is fit in which case I think Onions or Anderson should make way (my choice would be the latter, who has flattered to deceive far more than Harmison has ever done).

It is the middle order where changes are needed, but England simply cannot drop all three of them which means Collingwood is safe. Bopara and Bell to get the chop for me, with any two of Ramprakash, Key, Trott or Denly to come in, although I would be reluctant to give two debuts in such a crucial game as it would give Australia a further lift (not that they need one).

The alternative, although it is never going to happen, is to plead with Trescothick.............
Miracles don't happen twice 8:12pm on 08 Aug 2009 Jimmy Anderson. Ahh, Jimmy. Freshly crowned in the media as "The King of Swing". What utter nonsense.

I have long been critical of Anderson, and subscribe firmly to the opinion that he is vastly over-rated, and is as likely to go at 6 an over as he is to bag a 5-for. And why?

Sorry, but any quick bowler (and bowler, come to think of it) who is looking at his front foot at the point of delivery is always going to be prone to dragging the ball half way down the track, getting despatched square of the wicket with relative ease by any decent batsman.

If the ball doesn't swing he is an average bowler. Sorry, but nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

I would actually say the achievements of both are very similar - both were at the top of their game, both brought their sport to the attention of millions, and both were single-minded perfectionists.

Add to that the fact that Faldo continues to promote the game through the junior ranks, and I fail to see why he is any less deserving than Botham.

As you're comapring Hoy and Holmes to Faldo, do you not think Nick's success was the result of years of single-minded hard graft too? Your comment is ironic, given that Faldo's lack of popularity stemmed in the main from his utter focus and single-mindedness!!

And as regards athleticism, I'm willing to bet you don't possess the physique of Tiger Woods - the very epitomy of an athletic sportsman.

I welcome contributions to BBC Blogs - I only wish contributors would comment on a topic they have some knowledge of.
Faldo - a true sporting great 08:27am on 13 Jun 2009 I can't believe all the criticism of this hard earned, long overdue award. Faldo has won SIX majors and brought a whole generation to this wonderful game.

His personailty may not be to everyone's taste, and I confess to having cringed at some of his handling of the press and media, but the fact remains that his feat of winning six major championships is unlikley to be surpassed by another Brit, never mind an Englishman (for those hung up on nationality) for a long, long time.

His Junior Series has kick started any number of promising careers, and Faldo Design is responsible for a whole host of top quality courses, so he cannot be accused of not giving anything back to the game which brought him such rich reward. And he has re-invented himself to become an excellent commentator - not something I thought he would be capable of given his general dislike of all things "media" during his playing years.

I for one applaud the decision to recognise his achievements - anyone who dissents is not looking at the big picture.
