Aussies collapse to revitalised England 10:57pm on 17 Jul 2009 I went yesterday and I thought it was one of the better England batting performances that I've seen over the years. Strauss' innings in particular was excellent - after tea when the ball started swinging it was like watching two different games when he was facing and when any other England batsman was facing. It was a very measured and confident innings and now we've had the chance to see both sides it should be the decisive batting contribution. England's bowling today was excellent and they used the conditions far better than the Aussie bowlers. They didn't give runs away and were able to apply pressure to a very good batting line up. Overall, England deserve great credit for raising their game from last weekend.

I'm not sure how the very poor suffer in a recession. Do their benefits or services change? As far as I can tell, the people who are going to lose out in this are all the people in between the very poor and the very rich who will be losing their jobs, seeing their standard of living decline, their pensions go into meltdown and be left with a vast legacy of debt.
Charities and politics 4:08pm on 08 Apr 2009 #6 & #8 - Would you dispute the point that Jill Kirby makes - "The most important added value that a charity can provide, which a politician cannot provide, is to be out there actually saving lives, saving children, being there for those who need them."

Or did you both just want to make a very dull and tired anti-Thatcher remark? She left power 20 years ago, get over it.

Ding! Ding! Mervyn v Gordon (plus Danny) 10:38am on 25 Mar 2009 The problem that I see with these stimuli is that they achieve so little. Let's face it, this government has a very poor record of achieving value for money. Unless, the gain from spending is greater than the cost of borrowing all the government is doing is digging us into a deeper hole than we're already in.

As far as I can tell this is more about Gordon Brown spending our money to try to win him the next election than to improve our lot.

What goes around comes around - perhaps the ultimate lesson of globalisation.
Perils of political promises 10:17am on 23 Mar 2009 In response to the question: 'Are your tax policies in disarray?'. The response should be: 'No, the economy and public finances are in disarray and until we know where we stand all promises need to be put on hold.' That's being responsible politicians. Saying that they will be standing by tax cutting policies is just nonsense and totally unbelievable and the electorate won't thank them. Get a grip Cameron.

A couple of points. First, the cash does not belong to the business, it belongs to the owners of the business. Giving management even more power than they already have to abuse shareholders is an astonishingly bad idea.

Second, what are companies supposed to do with all this excess cash? Have it sitting on their balance sheet doing nothing? They should invest what they need to in profitable projects and return surplus cash to their shareholders to invest elsewhere. That is the efficient use of capital within an economy and benefits everyone.

I don't entirely agree with Mervyn King that it would take a Herculean effort to stop these bubbles forming. Monetary policy has been far too loose for many years due mainly to very low (unsustainably low) oil prices in the 90s and the (temporary) effect of China in the 00s on global inflation leading to excessively low interest rates for nearly two decades. This should never have happened and along the way there have been an ongoing series of bubbles that should have warned us of this. Even Greenspan himself warned of "irrational exuberance" back in 1996. Yet neither he nor any other central banker did anything to stop it, instead they continued stoking the fire.
