Prime Minister's Questions: Schools 4:29pm on 25 Nov 2009 If, as Balls says,
"Balls is about to reply insisting that:
• Both have been inspected by Ofsted since 2007
• Both are registered with the Department for Schools, Children and Families
• As a result both schools have legitimately received government funding"

Why was funding cut for the schools in October? (As per your colleague Laura's tweet) Surely this means that this Labour goverment has been funding extremism in our own country given that they (the schools) had until October been recieving state funds. Now that is shameful.

I think you'll find that Baroness Ashton is still on the commission as the UK rep and that we don't get to appoint another. We have now lost influence on the trade brief.

Basically she is the female version of another unelected Labour stooge, Lord Mandelson, busy collecting titles that noone voted her to have.
Another example of PM Brown selling us down the river for cheap short term political advantage (didn't really work tho) and giving away influence to the European State.

Offering the High Rep post to Britain means that we will not get the post that really matters i.e. the economic brief or financial regulation brief. This means that the UK will be in thrall to whatever german or french person gets this brief. Over-regulation of the financial sector could decimate the city of London and our financial services sector (which is a lot bigger than just the banks). Ever closer union and european taxes are just round the corner.
Once again this Labour government (and Gordon Brown) has done what is best for themselves (i.e. get a Labour crony in a high profile but pointless role - all Baroness Ashton will give out are vague communiques based on lowest common denominator foreign policy) and not in the interests of the UK.
If you thought it was all over... 11:41am on 19 Nov 2009 This is what really annoys a lot of people. We, the people, will have no say on who is to be the President of the Council of Ministers. All these shady backroom deals show the EU is a very poor light. I am sure all those new entrants to Europe from the former soviet bloc countries are really happy that their years of struggle to have the right to decide who should speak on their behalf are really happy to have joined the EU.
On another point, the left were never going to get their man (whoever that might be) into the top job as the biggest grouping in the Euro parliament is made up of Right Wing parties so it was always going to be centre candidate. Whilst the carveup meant that the High Rep job would go to a centre left candidate... All the talk of TB was just that, talk! Seriously, man who will have to testify at the Iraq enquiry next year could not possibly be the EU POTCOM (President of the Council of Ministers).
So, the Czech was not in the post 11:31am on 03 Nov 2009 At the last election, all three parties promised a referendum on the Lisbon constitution/treaty BEFORE it was ratified. Labour and the Lib Dems reneged on that promise. The Tories (Dave's "cast iron guarantee") did not. With the Lisbon treaty all but ratified, the facts on the ground have now changed so a new policy on restraining Europe's influence on our sovereign British laws will have to be thought out.
The electorate will remember that it was Labour and the Lib Dems that sold them down the river and it was the Tories who stood up for them. Every manifesto promise made by Lab/Lib will mean nothing.

Not one but two major rows 1:32pm on 02 Nov 2009 The comment doing the rounds is correct... Advisors advise and Ministers decide. That principle is completely correct.
The problem is this.
PM Brown and Ms Smith decided before they heard the advice.
They could have said that even tho the evidence shows less harm from cannabis compared to alcohol, that is not a road down which we want to go, except that they did and then changed their mind.... typical.
There is another argument to be had here, California (a state with an economy similar in size to our own) has a £14 billion medicinal cannabis trade. Surely this would help to pay down some debt?
Rising slowly 11:51am on 14 Oct 2009 As Gordon Bruar (?) said on last night's Newsnight Scotland, Britain's flexible labour market is one of Thatcher's better gifts to the nation.
Europe and the UK election 11:34am on 12 Oct 2009 Gavin, could you give us a run down on who all our parties sit beside in their respective groupings in the European parliament and then we can decide for ourselves. I am sure there are less desireable people in each of the groupings. Otherwise this just looks like the Tories are being singled out for their associations and the other parties are being let off scot free.
