Does the atheist ad breach the advertising rules? 12:37pm on 13 Jan 2009 Ascension: "You're kidding me right? You don't have to prove stuff "doesn't exist" it's the opponents whom must prove this imaginary deity exists."

But if you're making a claim that something doesn't exist, then other people have a right to ask you why you think that.

Anyway, this whole thing seems a bit dumb to me, but why didn't they do something like put a quote on the bus by someone like Richard Dawkins saying 'There is no God'? Would that be more acceptable? Because being a quote, it shows that it's an opinion.

Not that I want to help them out in any way (I believe in God, plus I think the whole bus poster thing is a general waste of time and money!), I'm just interested in whether it would put them on firmer ground?
On the metaphysics of an advert 1:23pm on 08 Jan 2009 I hadn't thought they'd been made to add in the 'probably', I thought they chose to do it because they suspected that the ASA wouldn't let it through otherwise?

I may well be wrong though, it's just that I think I remember reading it somewhere.

I agree with Orvillethird, it would be better to have the triumph of the resurrection - which was, after all, the 'final act' of the story.
Is it safe to Explore? 6:13pm on 16 Dec 2008 Microsoft have been very lazy with IE - once Netscape died, they basically had almost full market share and stopped bothering to develop the browser.

Unfortunately, they are also extremely sloppy when it comes to implementing web standards - as a web designer, my work is roughly doubled by the need to work around IE issues.

Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera are much better alternatives - and all are free and easy to install.

And for proper security - try Linux instead of Windows.
"Presbyterians brought the Mutual Society to its knees" 4:21pm on 16 Dec 2008 Well said. Too many people saw the Society as an investment opportunity rather than an opportunity to support others, and when the going got tough, they bailed out quickly.

Others who were less financially savvy thought their money was safe and now have no access to their life savings.

Of course the society itself bears much of the responsibility for what happened - why didn't they take action more quickly to prevent large sums being withdrawn? But ultimately, people were greedy, and that brought the society to its knees.

I hope the Presbyterian Church can now acknowledge that mistakes have been made, take steps to help those who are in real need, and learn the lessons from this.
A cold house for atheists? 1:33pm on 19 Nov 2008 Having worked in several places in which there were generally a few vaguely 'churchy' (Christmas and weddings) people, a couple of atheists, me and maybe one or two others (actively practising faith) and the rest of no strong opinion, I don't really see where Brian is coming from when he talks about atheists being afraid to tell their colleagues about their atheism.

In a lot of places people of faith are ridiculed, and in many others no one gives much of a toss either way.

This current 'oh, us poor atheists are so trodden upon' rhetoric is starting to get really tedious. In some places you will be discriminated against, in some there will be discrimination in your favour, and in the vast majority no one will give a stuff. That's life.
Richard Dawkins's successor says the Royal Society 'probably made a mistake' 09:43am on 08 Nov 2008 du Sautoy strikes me as a much better holder of the professor of the Public Understanding of Science than Dawkins was. I think Dawkins actually managed to decrease public understanding of science by pitching science into a pointless battle with religion.

du Sautoy seems a more thoughtful, less militant man, and I look forward to seeing how he takes things forward.
An unconventional Church 2:12pm on 05 Oct 2008 Good to see an article on the 'other side' of evangelicalism. All too often, we evangelicals are portrayed as fundamentalist, right-wing, hard-liners. Of course, some are like that (and they probably tend to be the ones who shout louder), but the spectrum of evangelical views is a wide one.

And it's not just the 'new' churches either - plenty of traditional evangelical churches have both 'conservative' and 'liberal' members happily worshipping together.
