Drogba inflicts pain on Liverpool 2:28pm on 05 Oct 2009 Early days, but if Arsenal win their game in hand, the big three are shaping up to put up a bit of a gap at the top. Chelsea and Arsenal both stuttered last year for different reasons, but already look better this season. Man Utd will continue to be there and thereabouts, and must still be with Chelsea favourites for the title. The question could soon move onto who will be the fourth - Man City's resources make them the obvious, though Tottenham have a wily manager at the helm.
Liverpool I reckon will finish around 6th - last year was a classic bit of opportunism by them while others faltered. This year will be a lot harder, and their huge debt to profit ratio only shows the gap between their spending and lack of success, which could yet continue to bite further.
History in the making 5:56pm on 07 Jul 2009 It's been a good summer of sport so far, but inevitably something has to come along at some point and spoil it. And here it is, eleven men standing in a field watching grass grow, watched by a bunch of middle aged men who are under the illusion that this is a mildly less embarrassing activity to confess to than train spotting, with which it shares so much.
If it quietly all minded its own business it would be fine, but instead we get media saturation for days and weeks on end, much of it permeated by the familiar whiff of the english xenophobia towards its former "colonies". And then it all ends in a draw...
Liverpool on road to glory 12:16pm on 10 May 2009 I doubt you could find a more pro-Liverpool article without visiting the club's own website. The truth of the league now is that the leaders need 7 points from 4 games and nothing Liverpool do changes that.

As to next year, the truth on that is Liverpool will rarely get a better chance than this year. Man Utd barely showed up in the early months and Chelsea consigned themselves to disarray. Both will be better next year. Arsenal remain an enigma, but could yet end their seemingly permanent transition.

So for all their debt, all their spending, all their record 62 man squad, Liverpool have missed their chance. And we still await the impact on that squad of renegotiating their bank debt this summer. It's an expensive time to find new bank facilities, and there will be more restrictions than last time round. Enforced player sales must still be likely.

Far more likely for next year for Liverpool is back to chasing for the fourth slot. They may be in the "big four" when it comes to spending or debt, but they don't merit inclusion in any elite until they win the league, which still looks some way off for all Benitez's rhetoric.
Downcast Benitez fears worst 7:12pm on 22 Apr 2009 Liverpool have never been serious title contenders - they've just taken advantage of a bit of an off year by the big three. As the season progresses, though, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd have all improved, although the latter have lost a bit of recent form, but it is Liverpool that are really coming unstuck. They cracked under pressure earlier in the year, and had a brief bit of enjoyment when they fell far enough behind that they relaxed and got the rub of the green a bit. But third place still looks the most likely. I am reminded a bit watching some recent games of England playing in the rugby world cup in 1991 - playing dull boring stuff for so long, and then when it got to the end suddenly realising they could only win by opening up a bit. Liverpool are trying to do the same a bit - but just as then, it's not their natural game, nor their managers. They're just not good enough.
Benitez relishes vital victory 7:56pm on 02 Feb 2009 I read today that the telescopes of Jodrell Bank in Cheshire are back on line. They are hoping to look into the deep distance of time from the period of 1 billion years after the big bang to shortly before it (which given it was 13.7 billion years ago is some while back).

Apparently scientists were surprised when viewing some of the earliest images to see the last known pictures of a Liverpool captain holding the league trophy aloft.
Losing to the Brits 09:02am on 21 Aug 2008 As a Scot I just don't recognise all this obsession about the Australians. It's an English thing - all their rivalry in rugby and the tedious Ashes is on events where England on their own are playing Australia. Strip out the medals with contributions from the other British countries and are England on their own still ahead of Australia?

So English folk, quit trying to use us to piggy back and help in your own chippiness.

It's a shame England aren't here 7:07pm on 21 Jun 2008 I think the blogger may be mistaking European politeness for affection. Austria and Switzerland are particularly known for it - but it is also quite an easy thing to commiserate with the fan whose team aren't there.

Elsewhere, though, you can't help but note how everyone is saying this has been one of the best international tournaments in years. Safe from the stodgy play of the England team and the bellicose nature of its boorish fans, the competition has been able to simply flourish.
