Agassi confession lengthens shadow of doubt 11:30am on 03 Nov 2009 If you look at American sport in general it is rife with drug use, we have seen 'scandal' after 'scandal' in Baseball and Track & Field. Who knows what else has been covered up and what else is yet to be revealed. As the USA has been leading the way in most sporting pursuits since the beginning of professional sport it does leave you with a lot of questions and a profound scepticism.
I have long hated the scapegoating of certain athletes as I always believed this was just a smokescreen to hide the bigger picture. It is no surprise to see someone like Marion Jones jailed, when all Agassi had to do was say I didn't do it and he was let off.
The use of drugs in sport always seems to follow cultural trends, we saw it with soviet bloc countries in Eastern Europe, China and various other cultures. The con was that we were tricked into believing western European and American athletes were clean because every time someone was caught it was treated as a one off. As for the ones that got away who knows what substances were used! If Agassi found it so easy how many other 'darlings' were able to bat their eyelashes around a positive drugs test.
Man City challenge is no fake 12:32pm on 06 Oct 2009 The fact that so many football writers couldn't see this coming before the season started is what I find astounding! To now come out and say I think City can finish in the top four is about as enlightening as saying Portsmouth are going to face a struggle to stay up. There was so much rubbish written about what was happening at City, despite the fact that the owners seemed very reasonable and gave Hughes full backing. He has assembled a great squad but nothing much has changed since the start of the season, and it wasn't as if signing Lescott came as a surprise. Man City will finish above Arsenal this year, whether Arsenal make the champions league depends on what Liverpool can do.

Is this guy going to be a junior his entire life? You cannot justify the amount of money that table tennis was getting by winning a junior championship! The real test was Beijing and they failed miserably, GB players may be the best for a few years, but they are light years away from the Chinese.

Beckham gambling in Milan 1:52pm on 25 Oct 2008 I see Beckham is still like Marmite people either love him or hate him. But just to answer a few questions I have read here, Beckham is by far the best crosser, dead ball specialist available to England. All of Beckham's potential heirs have weak crossing ability. SWP, Walcott and Bentley have other qualities but none of them can deliver dangerous crosses.

Beckham may have only played 32 mins of football for England in the last few games, but have you seen how many assists he has. This is why Beckham is always a good player to have around the squad because he consistently delivers. Be honest, if England were a goal down in the 90th minute and had a freekick on the edge of the box who would you want to take it?
Hacking off Hackett 12:21pm on 19 Sep 2008 I am a United fan, and we are not all whinging about this decision as some seem to think. Fergie is playing his mind games as usual it has nothing to do with what he actually believes. The most surprising thing is that after so many years so many people still get wound up by the master of media manipulation! Reporters, managers and opposition fans should just stop biting, cos as long as you do Fergie will keep chucking his lines out.

On a secondary note regarding the Terry challenge. As the rules stand the foul was not a red card offence, however personally I would like to see all challenges that take cynicism to that level punished with a red card. It is something you see a lot in the Italian Serie A, teams will commit men heavily at set pieces then leave one man back (who hasn't been booked) who will foul his opponent at the first sign of a break. By not being more severe on this level of cynical behaviour we run the risk of losing what for me makes English football so great to watch, the pace of our games. By punishing these tackles with yellow cards we may end up slowing our game down to the sort of pace you see in Italy.
Is Phelps really the greatest? 5:18pm on 13 Aug 2008 If athletes ran 50m, 100m, 75m and however many other variations of distance as the swimmers do then Carl Lewis would have won 20+ golds. I am not knocking Phelps achievements, but lets be honest winning the 100m and 200m golds on the track is a thousand times more difficult than the same feat in the pool. You only have to look at the number of people who have achieved each to appreciate this fact.
Why Man City must ditch Ronaldinho plan 1:35pm on 14 Jul 2008 Ronaldinho won't be joining Man City so this is a bit of a non issue. However what you have to realise is that Thaksin wants City to be seen as a real force in Europe, the only way you do that is by signing big names. Just the fact that this rumour has been around for so long will have increased the profile of City across Europe.

Lots of fans think these non football men don't know what they are doing, but they forget that some of these owners are the richest businessmen in the world. They know precisely what they are doing and it is not trying to do the managers job. If Hughes didn't want Ronaldinho he would have said so by now.

I for one would love to see him in the premiership but since the media and most fans seem to have decided he isn't wanted, he is even more likely to chose a warmer more hospitable country.
Man Utd should sell 'slave' Ronaldo 10:37pm on 11 Jul 2008 Player release clauses should be compulsory on all player contracts. This will eliminate all this tapping up business. There is already legal scope for adding in these clauses all it will take is for fifa to agree and the situation would be much simpler.

All clubs tap players up at the moment United tap up Villa's players, Villa tap up Brighton, Brighton Yeovil's etc etc. If we really want to stop this lets put some realistic solutions on the table. Release clauses not only resolve situations such as Ronaldo/Real, but also prevent greedy agents engineering transfers when their clients are hot property.
Man Utd should sell 'slave' Ronaldo 7:59pm on 11 Jul 2008 At first I thought maybe he does have a point, not the rubbish about slavery but maybe clubs shouldn't try and keep players against their will.

But Sepp Blatters comments ignore one major factor, contracts are two way. If players can abandon them at will how can you prevent clubs doing the same.

It is ok for the super rich players who are always looking for bigger and better, but what about the squad players, journeymen and youngsters? If one of them picked up an injury would it be fair for the club to simply release them despite the fact they have 4 years left on a contract?

The answer is obviously no and therefore due to the dual nature of contracts the player should not be allowed to either.

Perhaps the players need to employ better Lawyers to draw up their contracts, surely if Ronaldo had a £100m release clause in his contract this would be a non-issue. Real could offer the money and United would have to accept. If their is no release clause in his contract it is the players fault and he must live with it!
