I'm an Arsenal fan and a referee mate. It's my job not to respond.

Onto the article, and I find it very intruiging that pretty much every newspaper is writing about how Adebayor made a conscious decision to respond to the fans, and not how the fans made the decision to boo him at every opportunity. I know full well that players do get stick when they switch clubs, especially in acrimonious circumstances, but the fans may have gone a bit far. However, I didn't hear any racist chanting on MotD - is this what people at the ground heard?

Having said that, if the fans are baiting you in the first place, any form of response to them will only provoke a further and usually more aggressive response, and Adebayor almost certainly knew that. So, everyone's at fault really, bar the managers. Hughes was contrite and did not condone his player's actions, and Wenger is at last applying equal opportunities to his selective vision!

One point I don't think anyone has made yet is that there were a couple of Chelsea players who did maintain, even enhance, my respect for them - chief amongst them was Essien. Easily Chelsea's best player, and I don't remember him going near the referee (correct me if i'm wrong?). His finish was sublime, and, whilst people may point to his poor clearance giving the ball to Iniesta for the goal, that was pretty much his only mistake all night.
Shah shows value for England 10:54am on 01 Sep 2008 Is it just me that thinks Patel may be a little over hyped? I mean, don't get me wrong, 5 wickets on a debut is fantastic, but they were the last 5 wickets. Of those five, I would only regard Boucher, and possibly Morkel, as decent batsmen. One wicket yesterday as OK, but he should really get 10-15 games under his belt before he's really analysed.

Anybody care to rip my argument to shreds?
You Are The Ref #1 2:09pm on 03 Jun 2008 Only if the player deserved a yellow card would the referee allow play to continue. If the offence was a straight red card, no matter how advantageous the situation for the fouled team, the referee would have to stop play and dismiss the player.

No, actually, I think he's right. Consistently overrated, underachieving and seemingly unable to hold form for three Tests.
