BBC News, Twitter and suits 10:08am on 07 Mar 2009 It is interesting watching old media journalism merge into the world of the blogger and the social media information soup. Even vice versa in many cases. It's a shame that it's assumed that 'the young' should always dominate new communication platforms. If you're a communicator then you should be able to adapt to almost any new medium if you can find advantages to using it and information consumers (stop me I'm descending into marketing speak) can appreciate the value to them in using it also.

I understand the comment criticisms re Twitter and what is seen by some as non impartial publicity for a commercial service though taking that line presumably means we better not highlight technology services by Microsoft and Apple even if they represent what a majority of people are actually using.
Like it or not Twitter is currently where the numbers are in terms of diverse professional users and the so called ordinary public (many of whom are experiencing quite mundane lives, sorry if that's unpalatable) are interacting.
If you're a broadcaster and communicator such as the BBC you're going to want to use it rather than ignore it.
Presumably the critics were prefer the Beeb to point out that other microblogging services are available (which would then require that Twitter content is duplicated and responded to across all alternatives).Or we can just pretend that old media should never adapt to new challenges in a changing world and steadfastly refuse to embrace the corrupting influence of all new media much of which could well be offered by commercial entities. Facing up to change is not for the faint hearted.
Speed Diary: Day Two 3:00pm on 18 Feb 2009 I can certainly see a greater availability of high bandwidth services becoming available, HD video streaming services being one of them but I have to say I'm unconvinced that such broadband speeds will be offered without bandwidth shaping (usage throttling) skimming off much of the prime benefits.As others have said synchronous DSL could offer more subjective benefits for many. I'll be interested as to what your tests reveal.
What's your anthem? 7:30pm on 17 Oct 2008 'Always look on the bright side of life' (Monty Python via Eric Idle) would be a good alternative. Self deprecating , a good sing along (plus whistling) that suggests the classic British 'mustn't grumble' spirit.
Seinfeld is the master of Microsoft's domain 09:45am on 08 Sep 2008 I have to admit I'm in the 'don't get it' camp but then it's probably part of a series and I was never much into Seinfeld anyway.
If anything it seems to say Microsoft is like a pair of overpriced shoes that hurt a lot when you first try them. No?
Radio Pop - social radio listening 01:11am on 04 Sep 2008 A very interesting project that I hope will develop. I've had no joy in being able to use my openID even after signing up the conventional way (I've tried a number of my own open ID's). That aside I look forward to using this.
Ofcom acts on broadband speed 11:13am on 05 Jun 2008 I would have liked to see included a commitment to ensure ISPs are more transparent over 12 and 18 month contract period lock-ins especially when customers want to downgrade or upgrade their packages. Otherwise it's all a move in the right direction.
Will 7 prove deadly to Vista? 5:39pm on 28 May 2008 Windows 7 will clearly need to be allied to a new hardware purchase with an appropriately compatible touchscreen. Vista will get a longer life if Windows 7 compatible hardware makes it to market ahead of its eventual release though the same issues that dogged some hardware badged as 'Vista compatible' will also apply.If W7 is to be allied to very specific hardware (akin to the poorly implemented tablet PC) then that has other issues. Interface niceties aside, for the corporate market Msoft still need to assure users (and admins) that replacing or upgrading their XP desktops with Vista will not give these users (and admins) more headaches than benefits.
TV becomes social again 2:04pm on 25 May 2008 It certainly points the way to some uses for twitter beyond micro-blogging and life-streaming though clearly there were many twitter public timeline followers who were irritated by the dominant Eurovision swarming (I did personally use Summize to filter the Eurovision specific tweets) though currently such spontaneous events are pushing twitter's ability to cope to the limits. Inane or not last night was a good example of the social in social networking.
