Improving football for kids 11:30am on 26 Feb 2009 Hi Gavin, a great blog. I totally agree with you on the progression of kids in football. I was never the biggest player on the pitch or the fastest so in 11-a-side games I was shoved into defense on the right or left side and never given the ball. As an adult now who enjoys playing the game my technique is terrible and I panic on the ball. I would agree that English coaching needs to take a leaf out of continental coaching or Brazilian coaching which places emphasis on technique, passing, fitness and control of the ball. 7-a-side is ideal I recently went to Barcelona and saw the facilities at the Nou Camp. Multiple 5-7 a side pitches for the below 11s, a 1/2 size pitch for the below 14s, a 3/4 size pitch for the above 14s, and a whole second full size pitch for the reserves and under 18s... unbelievable! it just goes to show how they take development seriously. English football should do the same bring them on gently and improve technique before learning to hoof the ball up pitch!
Let's celebrate Moore and Beckham 12:30pm on 12 Feb 2009 Beckham is a great servant to England and should rightly have his achievement of 108 caps recognised.

To compare him however to Bobby Moore is a folly. Moore is everything England football should model itself on, professional, hard working, and World Class. Moore is in the highest reaches of English legends with Bobby Charlton. There really is no comparison.
It's Lampard or Gerrard 4:05pm on 13 Oct 2008 Gerrard did not play well on Saturday. He repeatedly gave the ball away and created nothing.

He doesn't look like the player that pulls on a liverpool shirt every week. There were at least 5 times where he should have had a crack at goal from 20-25 yards but instead hit a hopeless chip over to Rooney on the left wing.... it was unbelievable.

Frank in turn looked out of sorts trying not to get in Gerrard's way and in the end he didn't know whether he was coming or going.

Ashley... yes it was stupid but we've all done a stupid pass like that at one time. No need to boo him!

Upson shouldn't play in Belarus, he looks very nervous.

Thank god for Heskey giving a good performance!
Walcott and Capello stun Croatia 07:54am on 11 Sep 2008 Well a great performance, I was overjoyed in the pub last night. Long may it continue!
England must raise game in Zagreb 3:46pm on 07 Sep 2008 Look, 3 points against a team that played 11 behind the ball at some points is not as bad as we are making out. The game was controlled. At no point was there the usual england panic. WE KEPT THE BALL! A major plus for any england side, we didn't hit aimless balls to no one. My major point is the game was CONTROLLED. how many times can we say we have seen England play a controlled match over the last 2 years?

Rooney is a problem.... but there could be a solution. Put him in the midfield make him our new Scholes. We then get 2 out and out strikers to play upfront. Rooney then gets to play deep and run at players but we still have our threat up front.

I thought Walcott was good for the match and did well especially the first 20 mins. Maybe start with Bentley and bring him on for the last 20 mins when croatia are tired?

Lampard was a bit anonymous but he never got any space to do anything so I won't have a go now. Joe Cole should start in Croatia he is a vital part of England and should play on the right if Downing plays on the left.

OK the match wasn't the 6-0 we wanted but I was encouraged by some of the maturity that was shown. Next time at Wembley though I think we should put 5 in the midfield and only 3 at the back. GOOD LUCK LADS FOR WEDNESDAY!
Time for Capello to deliver 1:33pm on 04 Sep 2008 I don't think that Croatia are any more technically gifted than our players. They just play as Bilic wants them to with a huge team ethic.

This is the job that Capello has to do. Form a team ethic and trust within his players and get them to transfer it to the field of play. Then we will see an England team that can play good football.

I agree that leaving Owen at home may prove to be a bad idea. Hopefully he will then learn that he has to replace him with a goal scorer before removing England's most prolific striker since Shearer.

We must show confidence against Andorra and Croatia. Get the team to believe that they can beat these opposition at international level because they would in the premier league. England must believe in itself!
Crouch deal proves Redknapp's quality 3:13pm on 07 Jul 2008 I think Harry does a great job at pompey and he has again showed that he is a hidden gem of a manager. Good team ethic, gets the players behind him, achieves things thought almost impossible. The Pompey chairman must wake up everyday smiling!
